Hi i waswondering if this pc is to oldfor unreal based games
All play horrendous on 32 bit (unreal, deus ex, etc)and some just play with bad framerates even in 16bit(wheel of time)

dual boot w98 se(plus some fixes packs) and wxp sp3
amd xp 2000 1,6ghz
768 mb ram
geforce 4 ti 4400 128mb
creative audigy

Iplayed all games onwindows 98se and like i said in 32 the framerate is to low
Also wheel of time runs to slow

TBH i think this pc should run them with all settings on high am i wrong

BTW i have an amd phenom,5770 gpu and on this pc i would hate to play old games(the power consumption is to high)

thanks for the advice

It should run UE1 games just fine with everything on high. My old PC was even a bit slower than yours and it still ran them fine.

If they don't run properly it's likely you have a problem with background programs (downloads, torrents, ... ?) or adware clogging up your system. Also defragment your hdd if you haven't done it in a while.

Your vidcard is pretty old, but should be fine on all Ue1 based games, UT2003/4 might be OK on lower settings.
Check on background proggies running, in the start menu, click run then MSCONFIG
that will bring up a window, you can look for proggies you can disable on boot.
Check for Malware, give it the ole virus scan, scandisk and defrag it.
Also check on latest drivers even try new motherboard drivers and if your gung ho, update the motherboard BIOS.

I have system Shock 1 (whoa old!) I plan to play it thru before hitting SS2.

I agree with above, that system is more than suficient to run Unreal on. Its even powerfull enough to run the S3TC textures on it, wheater its the Low End or High End.

I too would think that something else is eating away recourses you need to run the game, and indeed malware, spyware or blunty some sort of virus might be causing it.

And since you run dual it is less likelly both installations are affected(but of course it can never the less), so the question popups, does it run equally slow on both OS, or just on oné?

But since no-one mentioned it, do you run the latest patches for Unreal? Cause that also could be the culprit.

Your pc is newer than mine and I've been using mine everyday since 10 years ago. UT runs pretty nice at full for the exception of crappy custom maps that really kill fps.

btw, I have GF3 so yours is newer, you see.

Unreal delivers this cutting-edge realism on computers using a Pentium 166 or higher. And for those of you lucky enough to have a Pentium II, MMX technology or a video accelerator, the Unreal realms will become your reality.

(Not talking about S3TC htere, these are the original system requirements from the time that S3TC was not invented yet)

It was invented from almost start, and it was built in the engine, otherwise we couldnt use as we do now ;) :p

But of course you are right :), while it was build in, they decided not to use it. And luckelly when UT was developed they added it as a showcase. And true, they decided to go with indexed texures for the releases, and the specs were based upon that.

And at the end i think backthan they were more limited by the fact videocards were small and most systems didnt have that much memory. And personally i think that a 60hrz Pentium could have done the trick as well.
