No. (Depsite what Microsoft Windows would have you believe).

You guys speak English with an American accent whether you like it or not :)

So some of the spellings are different. Does anyone give a toss?

Lots of languages going on there. Just cause the US gets a lot of attention doesnt mean that American is a language.

But if someone where to say "you speak american?" i would know that they are talking about english.

i'd say it is a language because even though they may sound alike, there are many differences with how words are said.

Lets say 10 people are at this meeting, half are British, half are American. During discussion of a business plan, someone at the meeting might say "Lets put it on the table."

half would think that means, lets forget about it and get to it later. The other half would think, lets work on this now first.

There are tons more. The play on words can be very different between the two languages.

a dialect is a subpart of a language, if all the dialects in the world would become new languages we would have 1.000.000 new languages tomorow :)

so in my case, from tomorow on, there also excists Flemish, cause flemish is differnt from dutch, and wait, we also have ''limburgs'' and vlaanders, antwerps, brussels,...., so tomorow there are 5 new languages, only from belgium yet, now there are 160 countries (or something) in the world, and they are all bigger then we, so you count :)

If 'American' is a language, it certainly isn't recognised as one - where as the English language is by far the most universal and preferred spoken language in the world - I've never heard it quoted as someone saying "Do you speak American?"
