Is a rating score of 7 bad?

Comments from Charon on Milb latest map.

"Almost masterpiece;) From mapping point of view, from me: 9

IndySkyz: Not have to be hardcore player to turn music off;) If you say you are so-called player, you are definitely not a pro-player. They always turn the music off:p Whatever, I think it's not case of gameplay - it's case of abilities. No one astute will rate this map as you rated it, looking even only at gameplay. I wont agree with you at all."

I gave the map a 6, after saying it was a 7 but I minus 1 point because I didn't like the music track(personal taste) and then I get told my opinion sucks and I am not an astute mapper, funny that all the so called astute mappers didn't have the balls to even rate the map. do I need to rate every map they say is great a 10 and every map they say sucks a 1, or can i have my own opinions on what makes a good map? I have made a few maps in my time, only one of my originals is here on Nalicity now, but a 7 on any map I made would be highly appreciated by me anyday of any week, hell even a 6 means its above average. As far as I can tell Nalicity should change the rating system from 0-10 to something like (no rating, it sucks, or its a masterpiece) thats it 3 ratings, because thats all some people tend to see.

I hear you but it seems sometimes it's not even worth trying to give an honest opinion anymore, even the mapper himself said " I didn't think players cared about the music" then why add a music track at all?, for the non-players? It just seems so lame sometimes that you can't say what you really think and have it takin for just that, why is it when I say what I think, I come off to others as I'm saying it is what they should think? music is a matter of personal taste, as well as how gameplay feels, and to the other thing I said was a technical question to the mapper about alowing the top to be accesable but not making the skybox look as nice as the rest of the map. From now on I just won't comment as I'm not an astute mapper myself.

Whenever you post a comment (or a review) you risk offending somebody. I've been called a lot worse than "not astute" for reviews I've made in the past. But that's just how it is. You gotta stick by your guns.

Music should be a default attribute of a map anyway. Anyone can turn it off, a lot of people don't, and menu music always sucks.

If you really want NO MUSIC, then use this and stuff it into the mylevel so no download is needed:
BLANK.ogg

Otherwise it looks like the mapper plain forgot to select a music track, or was not knowledgable to change it (both are not good mapping).

Music gets in the way for online DM or whatever, but singleplay games, especialy, the music that changes when enemies are around fits in real well.

Accept in quake1 it had that 9inch nails, PUKE, was annoying as hell, all this new metal and so called musicians these days can suck my big D. cause they cant play for SH_T
Hell we made stuff up like 25 years ago or longer that was just like metalica, we thought it was more fun than music, more like practice, but then metalica was ok, accept when they made that sleepyman or sleepwaever, or sleepydawn album WTF was it again.
well they sucked thereafter.

Oh how about that residual decay thing, all new music?
and when is the ETA? ay?

NIN is my favorite band:D Have you listened to any of the albums are just basing your view of them on Quake? Cus Nine Inch Nails rocks harder live than any band I've ever seen. Ever.

Yeah full soundtrack and completely new material. There's a demo of the music out. If you're curious, drop me a PM line.

Well I played guitar for a lot of years, and i love heavy rock, but nothing out seems very good at all these days.
There are some wich are actuall good musicians and I can respect that, but 95% of the music out, they can't play, they can't sing, not impressed in the least bit.

only one example of what is good i can think of right away, is go find "zombie stomp" from that slightly older ozzy album, now they can do it right.

LoL no I aint going by quake, but it was enough to know and other tunes I heard.

Coming off the subject a little...

True Redfist, most (guitarists) nowdays are 95% crap and learnt widdle-diddle at Music School.Music in levels depends on your preferences,I keep it on whilst playing off-line and off in multiplayer.

Whats's a 'Hardcore Gamer' nowdays?these ppl were around in,say,1998 after playing Quake 25 hrs a day..now we have Xbox/PS2/too many patch-me-up games to think about.

'Hardcore'....lol....now gaming seems like a hobbyist sport.

The trick is to get you're map out the appropriate audiance. Some people map in different styles and technique. Make a DM-Bathroom2001 and the online clan boys will love it, because that is the style of map they like. On the other hand, I dont like sniper maps that have no duck and cover theme. So I dont map that.

It does sort of frustrate me that, those stupid Bathroom style maps are played WAY too often. Whatever happened to maps with real layouts, or just plain, playing custom maps with bizzare gimmicks from time to time. I mean, I would rather play a round of Atari Battle Zone than Bathroom anyday.

100% totaly agree, I couldn't of said it better myself, all those bathroom maps are for people who are affraid to acctualy have any playing skill at all, it's just hide in the doorknob , they need that.Just like all that zark or any rapidfire junk.
They do spawnkilling, they think it's right, then whip out a regular map and all the little whimpys leave.
Then coupled with aimbots and radar, it's a little kids dream game.

By the way Redfist, I'm not anywhere near as harsh as you think I am in user reviews. I give maps zeros that I have played and found atrocious in some manner, I would never give a zero to say, something decent, like by David M or something. If you catch my drift. I only give low scores to bathroom style maps with no flow, or obviously bad maps that if you played, you'd understand.

Try Alien Gladiator Arena for example.

@IndySkyz::lol: That's actually all I want to say. But then I'm the one badass mapper who don't give a **** about players (Hm, ok, I really don't give a **** about players, but just coz I'm not one of them).
Noone said your opinion suck! I just thought players don't care about music, coz all players I know turn it off. I can't speak for the others, but at least I don't care if someone rates my map low.
And Ithaqua isn't a map for that hardcore players! It's just about competion with other mappers!

Well if your gonna make maps for mapping competition ,but think of it this way, you sure couldn't damage anything by have a good map for the "hardcore players" and get a good rep and have music that fits the game.
If people like to play your maps, that is more important than doing artwork considering it's for a game.
Besides I think you do maps for players anyway, more than looks, but they come out looking good so wtf.

I dont get the concept of making a map "Not for the players" it makes no sense, UT is a F****** game dude, this aint an art contest here, the idea is to make a map that has a good layout for the type of gameplay you want to achieve and then to make it look cool, if you fail on step one then step two is just a waste of your time and mine, sorry to be so brutal but if you don't map for players than you have lost the whole concept of UT!
