Introduction, and request for assistance

  • Two Factor Authentication is now available on BeyondUnreal Forums. To configure it, visit your Profile and look for the "Two Step Verification" option on the left side. We can send codes via email (may be slower) or you can set up any TOTP Authenticator app on your phone (Authy, Google Authenticator, etc) to deliver codes. It is highly recommended that you configure this to keep your account safe.

Greetings, all. I'm new to the forums, and relatively new to Inf (been playing for a bit over a week now). My roommate (Loko_Draucarn), from his incessent playing, eventually got me hooke on it. I can be typically found lying face down in a pool of my own blood, my reflexes having failed me yet again. Ah well, I'll get better eventually.

Anyhow, I've been considering setting up a server. Normally, I would have gone to InfOnline, but since they seem to be restructuring the site, that's a no-go. So, I've turned to this board for some assistance.

What I'm looking for is some good advice for setting up a server; recommended mutators (I'd like to use RAv2, if that's possible), anti-cheating measures, suggested maps, etc. Hopefully, I'll be able to have it up and running.

A little sys info:

OS: Windows 2000 Professional

processor: Athlon XP 1600+ (1.4 gHz)

RAM: 512 MB DDR

connection: LAN...connected by a 10-base T to an OC3. I have more bandwidth than God.
Right. There you have it. Any assistance at all would be greatly appreciated. And now, I commence with the lurking again.

Ouch, From what I understand windows 2000 does NOT do well for UT-based servers. The most common symptom, being huge lag spikes the first few minutes of every level.
Correct me if I am wrong, you guys ;)
And If you are interested in RA or any of its forms, just talk to me :)

Actually, yurch, I've already put RA in the server. :)

I'm really interested in two things at this point: advice as to running the server itself, and help testing its capabilities.

In essence, I want people to play on my server. A lot. I mean a whole lot. I have a lot of spare time, and many ways in which to waste it. Log on to the server, play for 37 hours straight, using a 14.4 modem...you get the idea. Help me test this thing out. That's an order, soldiers.

Server info:

It's called "TheWhaleShark's Inf Server" (yes, how creative of me). It's currently running the December 11th version of RAv2. Preliminary testing (meaning myself and my roommate playing on the server) has shown it to be fairly stable. The real test is how it responds to people who aren't located five feet from my machine.

Yay! 3 RAv2 Servers!

Um...ah...I know a script would help...there's one in the INF directory that when it crashes, it automatically boots it back up...but other than lan party non-dedicated servers, I've not had much experience with 'em.

Well, I've had about seven people playing on my server simultaneously. From what they've told me, it runs faster than AFA 2 (take that, yurch! :) ). Still get the occassional lag and packet loss, but that's to be expected. The server seems to run just fine under Win2k, and remains stable even when I play on it.

I'm not sure how often it'll be up; I just got the Ragnarok Online Beta, so that is something else I'm going to be doing. My best estimate is that my server will be up around 2:00 PM Eastern Standard Time on most weekdays. Weekends will probably be variable. I'll probably shut it down around midnight; however, I may also let it sit overnight sometimes. I don't know'; it really depends on my schedule.
