No. It'll work. If you have Unreal there's a map made by Shane Caudle with that purpose in mind. I believe the name of the map is hub.unr. It's a great start.

And here's the direct link on how to do URL's for Unreal, if you haven't already checked it out /~unreal/ubb/html/smile.gif

it's so easy to do i wonder why there aren't many more examples of it floating around.

i'm glad to be able to get help from people who both #1 know their **** (so to speak) and #2 don't mind answering questions no matter how..um..questionable.

time to get back to work. i have a universe to build.

thanks /~unreal/ubb/html/smile.gif

I've got till 1/7/00 to keep answering questions like this so keep shooting them off while the stairway to heaven is still here. Cause once it's gone expect response times to drop significantly, from me anyways.

Close, I lose the Santa suit and go back to school /~unreal/ubb/html/frown.gif
Then I become a part-time UnrealEd Santa.

The question that I have after reading through all this is this:

Is it easy to move one player from one server to another but have them retain any inventory that they got on the first?

I'm trying to implement something similar to purice, but I want to be able to make it more like a distributed 3d MUD (yeah I know evil idea, but it would be interesting *grin*)

Granted I know that I've got a lot of background programming that I still need to code up (DB connection for player storage, class systems and whatnot) but I see this as the primary hurdle to my even continuing with they project.

mongo wrote a little bit about persistent objects on unreal.epicgames.com/uscript blackmagic under 'using Entry for persistent object creation'. it's not much, but it's a start.

This is a great idea and I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who has given any thought to it. Hub portals are an awesome idea. Also think along the lines of Everquest..with wide open spaces you can made the "distance" or portion of the map that extends to the other server, just a sky box or even painting that the user approaches until the cross the server line and enter the new one, of course they would have to look approx the same. But thats just for multi server wide open areas. I personaly love the idea of hunting down an opponent accross different servers and environments..

If you've ever read the Hyperion series you remember the "farcasters" that were open teleportion portals to other worlds, you could walk down a main street strung w/ these portals and see a hundered different worlds all with different environments..this ideas rocks.

For anybody who's interested in doing a MUD mod for Unreal or UT, get a hold of Reflection. I'm not sure whether or not he's still going at it but he might be.

Here's his e-mail address.
