I am currently looking for a rifle (Since I'm two years shy of being 21, I am obviously not mature enough to own a handgun  ). I have been interested in shooting most of my life. I have been meaning to get one for a while, and have decided that I want to get one in the semi-near future. As this board is populated with many who are more knowledgable about firearms than the people around me in real life are, I decided I might as well post a question here.

I am mainly looking for a cheap and reliable firearm. Since I am merely a poor college student, I can't shell out $4000 for one of the super rifles which seem to find their way into computer games. I am simply looking for a cheap ($500 - $900) gun which will pretty much get me used to shooting. I would also prefer something that shoots cheap ammunition.

I have fired .22, .30-06 rifles as well as various blackpowder varieties (not too shabbily with all of them, I might add :D ), and I really liked the power of the .30-06, so I'd like something about that caliber (maybe that, or 7.62, and whatever that equivalent in America is, and even more possibly .223, but I really like the power and kick of the more powerful rifles).

I have no fear that I shall be sent in the right direction. Correct? :D

And before anybody asks...

This has ABSOLUTELY nothing to do with me having finals in a few days... :D

If you want a good Flat shooting/Fairly Hard Hitting (More than a .308 [7.62]) and a quite accurate rifle go with a Remmington Modle 700 In 7mm Remmington Magnum ;) Or if you don't like Remmington rifles go for a Winchester modle 70 in the 7mm Remmington Magnum. Both VERY nice rifles and quite accurate as i stated above.

Can't go wrong with the Remington, but I've also read several positive reviews of Savage rifles...

ThunderChunky, FWIW in my local paper this morning I looked in the classified and saw several rifles in your price range.

1 Remington 7400 .30-06 w/Barris Scope $450
2 Remington 730 .30-06 w/Barris Scope $300
3 Winchester .30-06 (no model # given) $350
4 M1 Carbine .30 w/bayonette $450

there where others, but I think you get the idea, if you want a good rifle I think you can pick up a used one for decent money.
Assuming you're in the US, what part of the country are you in?

BTW, Lord Bunker, these are in the Wichita paper, so ifn you're looking for any new rifles that M1 looks interesting (would be a short drive for ya ;) )

EAST SIDE, NIGGAS!!!

Sorry... That was somewhat uncalled for. :D

Unfortunately, I live in the midst of suburbia where firearms are not as prevalent. However, I do go to college around a more rural area (Charlottesville, VA), and by using stereotypical logic, I would assume I could probably find something cheap around here...

About used guns, are they generally reliable? The last thing I want is for half of my face to be missing because I bought some cheap gun and the barrel was less than it should have been.

If so, I might have to make a road trip... :)

Used Firearms are genraly ok just make sure that the barrel is in good condition, the magazine has a strong spring, it feeds ok, There is NO rust what so ever on it, the firing pin is in ok condition, and that the bolt works propaly (presuming you are buying a bolt-action),oh and also that the stock is in ok conditon, These are the main pionts i look for when i buy used guns :) ,Hope this helps :) ....

Contact a local gunsmith, if a seller won't let you take the firearm to a gunsmith for inspection then don't buy the gun (most gunsmiths will do a gun inspection for a small fee, like $10). Same thing goes for cars, if someone selling a car won't let you take it to a mechanic, don't buy it.

Guns are simple machines, so any defects will probably be obvious to you (even if you don't know much about guns).

Pick up a paper and check the classifieds, like Zundy said. If you have a shooting range/store near you, I suggest going there. They have an M1 Carbine at mine for $500 and they also have an AK-74 with fold-out stock for $200. I'm guessing it's $200 because 5.45 ammo isn't all that common. Generally, classifieds and most shooting ranges are the best place to go. Shop around and see what you like. They got a Winchester 300 Assault Shotgun for $350 at Stonewall. I can't wait to get my hands on that thing. :)

Try building a rifle yourself. Other than the obvious reason of it being cheaper, you also have the opportunity of seeing the insides of it before it gets gunked up. An AR-15 is a snap to assemble. It'll cost you $110 for a PWA/Rock River lower, $625 for a Bushmaster AR-15 kit, and roughly $200 for tools and accessories. You're going to have to buy the tools anyways so why not use it to your advantage? Total of $935 for a nice AR-15 and you get more variety of features that you want on it.

Check out www.ar15.com if you're serious about getting into AR-15s - it's an indispensible resource (especially about the legality of AR-15s).

Additional note, if you live in California, forget about buying an AR-15. Freakin' liberals there stopped registration of lowers this past year.
