I need help setting up dedicated server on T1

  • Two Factor Authentication is now available on BeyondUnreal Forums. To configure it, visit your Profile and look for the "Two Step Verification" option on the left side. We can send codes via email (may be slower) or you can set up any TOTP Authenticator app on your phone (Authy, Google Authenticator, etc) to deliver codes. It is highly recommended that you configure this to keep your account safe.

I have a full T1 at my disposal, but am getting horrible performance from the server. I am running a 1 gig thunderbird with 256 DDR ecc Ram and windows 2000 server. I have it set up for dedicated server, but i have no experience with this. If somebody could tell me what exactly i need for files and how to set it up step by step it could be of great benefit to all. SOB I really would appreciate any help you guys could give me since you have soooo much experience!!!!!!!!!!!!! I love this game and would love to host it if i can get the performance up. I'm sure there are tons of settings that i have totally screwed up. PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ok, what I think your asking is :

Set all the game options you wish to make avaiable - then click on the "start dedicated server" button.

thats the only easy way I know of, then you can log into it and change settings in-game.

I've found out you cannot be behind a firewall, proxy, or router to set up a dedicated server.

If I recall directly the tcp/ip stack in windows 2000 causes a creeping ping issue when you try to set up a dedicated server, or any server for that matter! I would suggest going back to nt 4.0 or linux whatever you are most comfortable with! Also run your server using a program called ServerDoc which keeps your server up and running, and will restart it if it crashes! I don't remember where you can get that program but I would check www.planetunreal.com/theadminpage for it! I would also run it as a service in nt so that you don't have to keep your comp logged in!

As I know, the creeping ping issue only occure when the web admin console is in use (or loaded).

so if you plan to use it, you must use the in game console to spawn the Web interface (don't load it in you .ini) and kill it after use.

FYI,
The creeping bug in Windows 2000 has been fixed in SP2. After applying SP2 I have had no problems.

Check out UTserver2.menkel.org
It is running Win2K+SP2 and UT436 server only.

If you want information about how to setup a dedicated server be sure to check out the Admin Page on www.planetunreal.com

It's not fixed with SP2, at least it didn't fix it on our DCPNet server for Strikeforce that we used to run with Win2k and SP2. Had to ditch Win2k to get any decent performance...

Operating Systems

I run 15 dedicated UT servers and have done alot of testing with various operating systems.

Windows 2000 with or without SP2 and with or without the web admin enabled will give you creeping ping over time with heavy loads. You just plain cant run UT as a dedicated server of any sort with win2k. Even if you use the compatibility options to emulate NT4 or Win95 this doesnt work.

Windows 98/ME will run A ut server with pretty good performance, though the OS requires restarts once every few days as the RAM gets all bunged up and doesnt clear out properly for new data

Windows XP beta2, RC1 and RC2 all suffer under the same conditions of windows 2000... it dont work.

Windows NT 4.0 SP6 is the most reliable solid way to run your UT server. It will stay up the longest, and run the smoothest with no lag issues being developed by the server itself (provided you have a good NIC, I strongly recommend the Intel Pro100+ Server network cards).

Linux 2.2.x is a very stable OS for running UT. My experience is that if you run all the GUI in the background NT 4.0 is a better OS, but if you run linux without the GUI it is faster and has more power to offer the game. For most people thats a little too... un... ungui-ish.

Hope this helps a bit... This is from my experiences running UT dedicated servers which I have done for nearly 2 years now. We also rent (I-LAN Station www.ilanstation.com) out dedicated servers so I have experience from that too.
