  • Two Factor Authentication is now available on BeyondUnreal Forums. To configure it, visit your Profile and look for the "Two Step Verification" option on the left side. We can send codes via email (may be slower) or you can set up any TOTP Authenticator app on your phone (Authy, Google Authenticator, etc) to deliver codes. It is highly recommended that you configure this to keep your account safe.

It's like this. My computer will not shut down all the way. It get to the point right before it says it is safe to turn off the computer, but never gets passed "your system is shuting down." I have upgrade my BIOs recently and installed a new processor.(went from a P2 350 to a P3 700 coppermine) I have reinstalled windows and everything a couple times. Could this be a BIOs setting? I have gone all through it and can't find ****. Maybe it is a registry setting, if so please tell me. It doesn't seem to be causing any problems, but I am anal about **** like that. Help PUF posters....You're my only hope.

I'm not sure if I name all buttons right I don't use the english Windows version.
Click on "Start"(in the lower left corner)then "Execute". Then type "msconfig". Then click on "more option".
There is a function called "disable fast shutdown". Mark this box. Perhaps it helps...

Run, you magnificent bastard.
There is a bug with Windows 98 (SE?) that might be causing this. Make sure you have all the latest updates from WindowsUpdate (http://windowsupdate.microsft.com/). It's something to try if 8-4-7-2's response doesn't help (although I do remember hearing something like that).

i think it's a bug with windows. i had that a few times. might be to do with power saving, as that's the part that turns the computer off. try re-installing power saving drivers, and checking power saving functions in bios
Hope this helps

Yep, definitley do a Windows Update and get most or all of the critical updates for your system, and the "Windows Shutdown Update" -- it'll be listed in there.

Here are a few articles from the MS Knowledge base if you're interested in spending some time reading about it.

I tried both sugestions and had no luck. The shut down suplement didn't help and all the updates didn't help either. Looks as if I am going to have to format again. Maybe this time I should intall 98se and make sure it is able to shut down before I go crazy installing drivers and software. Sound like a good idea?

Billy, I've had that problem with about 60% of my boxes. Basically, it's a Win98 bug, and if the above suggestions don't work right, theres nothing you can do about it.

Ah, heck, Billy, sorry to hear that. On the bright side, there is no danger of damaging your computer by hitting the power switch as long as your hard drive is not spinning.. You'll still have to go through the scandisk next time you boot but I have a tweak that will disable this if you want (would have to look it up)..

to disable scandisk:

Try what I said above, but intead of marking "disable fast shutdown" mark "disable scandisk"! That's all.

Infidel is right. If you wait a few seconds after the shutdown process stopped, you won't have any serious consequences!

Hey, whaddya know.. I've played around a lot with msconfig, but it's usually just for easy access to all the startup items. The scandisk disable that I've always done requires editing msdos.sys and entering a scandisk flag. I've also configured Windows to present me with the boot menu (dos prompt, safe mode, etc) for one second in there.

I am going to format again. I want to get to the bottom of this problem. I might even try windows ME again by doing a custom install so I can elimenate all the gay **** it puts on.

Using mscomfig (along with Tweak UI) you can tell Windows to behave!
With msconfig you can edit the autoexec.bat, config.sys, win.ini and system.ini, as well as the autstart menu and a few other very useful things.

Billy:
If you want, do a re-install, but in one year Windows begins to bitch around again! The system just destabilizes if you install too much (especially drivers) or hack into vital parts like the registry.

TweakUI is probably the single most useful piece of software that I've ever used from Microsoft... :)

One of my favorite shortcuts is the "Create as file.." option -- I've got the Control Panel in the top level of my start menu, very very easy access to it.

I've been compiling a list of *useful* Win tips / tweaks -- anybody have anything to add? There are hundreds of such lists out there but most of the things are either not truly useful or can be accomplished with TweakUI. :)

Run, you magnificent bastard.
My favorite part of TweakUI? Using the Send to... option. Why the hell wouldn't I be able to right click a file, and choose to move it anywhere I wanted in my computer w/o having to install TweakUI? It only makes sense. Alas, Micros~1 decided that we would not be allowed that option. Thank the gods to the person(s) at Redmond who developed TweakUI.

Yeah I have lost track of the number of times I have seen this.... in fact, my home machine was doing it for a while there... sort of fixed itself for no specific reason. It's probably a driver issue.

Win95 did this too BTW. It is the bane of Windows 4.x. I remember doing enterprise roll-outs in late 1995 with 300 name-brand PCs, all with MS certified stickers on them, all supposedly the same model, all built from disk images, and abut half displayed this problem.... :(
