How do you get alpha channels to work

If it's a splicit alpha channel (embedded on the texture) you can do that with photoshop. Go to channels, create a new layer and paint it.

How are you currently doing it? Do you have to export it to a certain filetype? (ie. DXT5 texture with alpha channel or whatever)

For a targa you may need to use layers to get transparency.. Ive never used targas myself but for a png to have alpha you have to remove the background and set layer(s) so their transparency looks right then "save for web" as 24 bit png.

Or you could save as a DDS and use the actuall alpha channel you made in photoshop (much easier).

That's because you need the nVIDIA texture tools plugin for photoshop to do that.

You can find it here.

Then only thing you need is to set up Alpha 1 channel. Black is transparent.
All after how detailed you want it use DXT1,3 and 5. Where DXT1 comes with both 1bit alpha and no alpha. DXT1 is usually enough for masking/transperant parts. DXT3 is for more details and well, I see DXT5 as a little overkill for grass.
