How big should my playing area be?

It said somewhere to be like 2048wx2048bx1024h. Is this good or should it be bigger for an average level?

depends on what you mean by average level. Depends on how you want people to play it - i.e. what tactics will be used, how they will carry out objectives, where they will take cover, what weapons will be used in what areas... lots of stuff

Look at some indoor maps (like spooger's RS maps They have a good layout for an average player count, nicely structured with sufficiant cover. Along with archives, they're my favourite indoor INF maps. Now imagine if they were expanded over a huge area the size of Extreme prejudice. It would be too big, like a huge maze, you'd never find anyone. It works the other way too, an outdoor level with limited size (only as large as Texasbank or MWH) would result in rounds ending within a minute of respawning.

That's why its important to plan or work out how your level will look and play, once you know that, the ideal size will become more obvious.

the size of the map should always depend on your architecture and not the other way round

    Well

I was inspired by DM-TeamHomeBase (or similar name, can't remember and am too lazy to look in Win Explorer). I want the tactics used to be much like that. Of course it's not going to be a copy map, I just like the idea and will make something with the same use of strategy. I like how in that map there are towers which give snipers an advantage but the towers are very light so you are easily seen. Then on the ground in places it is light where there is cover and other places it is darker so you could easily take out a sniper in a tower from the ground. It was very well put together and it has DEFINATELY made my rotation. The skybox looked oddly large tho. I was wondering if I made it any smaller, would that detract from the strategy needed? Or if I expanded it, would the rounds be too long and pointless running would take place? I want it to be perfect without stealing his ideas. Know what I mean? Thanks

Just as a reference - Belgrade, currently is made up of around 7680 units wide and around the same deep - and it's about 3/4 done...but what reaper said is true, you shouldn't try and set a map size, just build until you want to stop, within reason of course. It does depend on what sort of combat you want to occur in certain areas, a good map has a combination of all types - sniping, close quarters battle, vertical fighting, grenade spots...and a whole lot more...
