After a month of working out how to play with ungodly bad pings - I get a lot of pity /~unreal/ubb/html/smile.gif - I think I can give some advice with confidence. If you have any to add, please do so!

    1) Don't *aim* at players. Dodge, look, dodge, fire. You have to anticipate where the players will be. I fyou try to play by what you see, you'll miss and die. It's weird and takes time but once you get used to it, you can rack up some frags.

    2) Play defense. Though LPBs make better defenders, you can actually be a high scorer by focusing on flag recoveries. You just have to stay alive and hover about 1/4 or 1/3 of the way back toward the enemy base. After they take your flag, load up multiple rockets and lead them (they are usually looking back anyway). If that fails, try double enforcers (even for HPBs they work great). Finally, shock rifle combos can either kill or knock them off ledges (you only get once chance though so practice).

    3) Help your team by never letting the enemy get your redeemer (which is awesome for flag recovery & multi-kills!). Just don't alt-fire since it'll explode immediately HPBs.

    4) Use the rifle like a pistol, shooting from the hip. If you try to snipe, you'll die unless you have a lot of time so just shoot and lead. It only takes one hit to cripple or kill and two hits will take down most anyone. I like it since it's fast and can head shot.

5)Stay out of line-of-sight! LPBs do not even need to hit you to kill you (at least according to what you see. I've been killed by snipers and rockets long after I thought I'd turned a corner and been safely out of sight - *lagkill* - so always be aware of who could see you).

    6) Be the support guy. You're not likely to be the main flag capturer but you can die for your team /~unreal/ubb/html/wink.gif Be the one to stay between your flag carrier and the enemy, taking bullets/rockets so they can score. I've even jumped in front of a redeemer! Also, since everyone will fly by or pass you anyway, lag behind and get easy kills.

    7) Be sneaky. Stay awway from the main action sometimes and take out enemy snipers, hog their powerups and redeemers. I even will gather redeemers and *drop* them in front of a teammate LPB so they can use them more effectively.

    8) Steal the flag, bring it home and drop it. Not as glorious but I've found that while I can often get their flag back to our base, I'm at every disadvantage once they chase. SO I 'feign death' which makes me drop the flag. Just make sure you pick a good teammate or it'll be wasted.

    9) Rocket alt-fire, shock rifle-combo for defense. You can use either to lay death-traps for incoming. Learn to time it so when you see incomers you can get out of sight (see #5) and nail 1-2 guys before they come in. Also, HPBs tend to not use much ammo before they die, effectively wasting it so go ahead and lay down suppressing fire.

    10) Be the communications specialist. If you just aren't being effective (it still happens if we're seriously overmatched), after you die, look around and start talking to your team. Let them know if there's a sniper on your own base or if the enemy's redeemer is up for grabs, if 3+ enemy are incoming, etc. You can even play dead in an out of thee way area and switch views among teammates so you can coordinate their efforts. It rarely will make a difference in *that* game but it can make future games more playable.

Sorry for the long post. Please add more!

Nice post. To add one thing to that(as an HPB myself, although not that bad on my 56K), if you can get you hands on a flak cannon, USE IT! This weapon has to be the best for HPB's. It has a huge shot radius, so the shot doesn't need to be as accurate, plus the schrapnel bounces off walls(so you can shoot around corners), which also allows for poorer accuracy.

I'm not a HPB, but what you say is great advice. I have a new respect for HPBs (I already had an enormous respect for them: their resilency, adaptability, etc). You can play on my team anytime!

Theres a wealth of good advice in High Pings post. Ive got pings around 400 and I regually come out at the top in assault. If your a HPB you may not be as good in a fight as a LPB but if you know the map better you can still win. Another point brought up was to give orders and call for backup. I use 15 speach bindings and use them all. If you issue orders you can organise offensives and give the rest of you team a good knowledge of incoming attacks. As for fighting tactics everything I can think of has already been brought up. Keep up the good work and make them LPB's know the real meaning of pain!

i never liked the term 'bastard' used to describe us HPB's...I think 'bastard' is appropriate for the like of the LPB's...but for any HPB's that manage to hold their own - 'HPB' is not fitting. something like HPH - High Ping Hero, would be better.

Yeah, if I wanted reality, I'd, well, not play games /~unreal/ubb/html/wink.gif

I guess I *like* being a High Ping Bastard, though 'Whiner' has an appeal as well. How about High Ping Victims as name?

Yeah! I can still top a server with >500 ms pings, because of weapons choice. Flak Cannon is gooood, but not great, I think. I can rack up several multi/ultra-kills with only two weapons (excluding redeemer, of course, I don't like using that weapon anyway). Those are the pulse cannon, with the second fire. Also, I know a lot of people don't like this weapon in deathmatch, but I think in spurts of killing, I can get 7 or 8 frags in a couple minutes even with huge pings. That weapon is... the biorifle! I hated this weapon in regular unreal, but it's great now. Just madly fire, and you are sure to spooge all over somebody! In the other game modes (assault especially, in choke points) it is much more useful. Like in AS-Rook when you are defending, just spooge all over the front of the door about 30 seconds after the game starts. don't hit other globs, of course, they blow up. I regularly get monster kills from that. When I say spooge, I mean, COVER the steps with that stuff.

    Unrelated tip:
In AS-overlord, stand to the left of the beachhead entrance after the mortar dropping spot with a flak cannon picking off the surviving attackers. The flak second fire looks exactly like the mortar explosions, so when they die, they think they got killed by someone in the towers. They would have to see you after they die, and how many people take the time to look around after they die in a time-limit game? I think that level is way too easy to defend. Several times, I played that game with masterful bots, and they never breached the beachhead. But it's really hard to get past the bots in the last room... anyways, I'll probably post these complaints elsewhere.

    Well some more useful tips.

I thank yeeand I agree with every one of them. I have to say that my ping isn't the best but it's ok. I really hate it when your defending the base and you lose the connection only to watch you opponents slide across the map and then suddenly appear directly behind you and result in instant death. Just a bit annoying if you ask me.

Just remember that some of those tips won't work if team damage is on! I played CTF last night (since the #PlanetUnreal guys were all off trying out for PuF or some such) on a server with team damage on. You cannot just blindly go firing weapons every time you see some one. You have to make sure it isn't a team mate!

It is a tottally differnt game with team damage on. I can't decide which I like better, team damage on or off. I enjoy both types of games as each has it's own challenges and playing style.

I played my first game with Team Damage the other day and hated it!!! Of course, that was before I realized that Team Damage was on.

Imagine dropping into a game, getting fragged about 10 times in a row by your own team mates, fragging 5 of your team mates in a row, then realizing that Team Damage is on.

I wish we could give orders to teammates. Some kind of override commands.

ShadowSpunk - please pull head out of rectum and shoot at the *Blue* player with the *Red* flag.

SniperButtWiper - Please stop sniping at respawns while you are winning/losing by more than 5 caps. Hell, just don't do it, you wuss.

WarWeenie - Please stop standing in the place you were respawned, trying to 'get back at' your idiot counterpart who just shot you. You're in the way.

Col.Colon - Please stop grabbing all health, weapons and powerups only to suicide with the redeemer.

Toys4Snots - Please stop flying the redeemer around like a goddam kite while your team gets slaughtered.

WorstPing - Just stop. Please, just stop /~unreal/ubb/html/wink.gif

Another tip(actually, this one is quite obvious) :
If ping sucks, the best thing is to find Razor and head for enemy base, then just press and hold primary mode /~unreal/ubb/html/smile.gif - 99% you will get killed(if enemy won't, then razors will) , but general chaos will help your team mates. Hopefully, you can even count couple of head shots!
{This best works w/ inside bases)

Bresnan came to our town and took over Cable Vision. They suck!! They said they would give us 30 more channels, but all they did was raise the rates! Oh yeah, and they gave us the Disney channel... oh, my prayers have been answered...the hours that I spent staring at the static on the disney channel are over! <sarcasm> now I can watch it in it's full glory!

    This is a good thread.

It's tough to hang in there when you can't find pings below 250,(I average about 300-450) and the laws of physics just don't apply anymore.

I agree on that Flak Cannon thing.

Dammit, one of these days I gotta get me a DSL.......
