having a weird issue with ut2vote57

    I for the life of me cannot figure out why but every so often when voting in a new game type my clients will all crash. The server switches to the game/map np and if the client rejoins there is no issue. I believe I have everything set up correctly though I am not understanding this crashing thing. I am attaching my 57.ini and a general protection fault error message I got the last time it happened to me in hopes you can help to sort out the why's so I can stablize my server again.

    did you ever try it with less mutators? i dunno, if tam (freeze) and insta and xloc work well together.

    Does it only happen with DM-BikiniBottoM or with standard-maps too?

    only in tam, or with other mods too?

    does it work without any mutators and with standard-maps?

    It can be switching games from dm to ictf, or vctf to ons, or freon to ctf it has no preference and it only happens when the server travels from gametype to gametype. so no not only at bikini bottom and not only tam.

    It doesnt seem to ever have an issue with adding / removing mutes at all only changing gametypes to my knowledge. yes I have tried it with less mutators as well, but sort of the point of using ut2vote is to be able to offer the mutes. If I read correctly it is capable of 50? and im at 21 and climbing, this should be fairly safe at this point I would think.

    proasm any Ideas by what you see here? :(

    the reason why i'm asking if you tried without mutators, is to see, if it's possibly a probleme of specific mutators not working together. It's not the question for the pur amount of mutators. I had a lot running too...

    But as you don't seem to emphasize my help, i'm not getting on your nerves with tipps like reinstalling the orig. files, posting the server.log or trying it on a different machine...

    nah your not getting on my nerves at all man, I tried to answer your questions best I could. I have gone through all the suggestions though prior to comming and asking for help from the author. Main reason I am asking proasm is because of his familiarity with the software and possible causes (other mutes/gametypes) of what I am seeing happen. Actually there is no problem with the server as I had said in the first post. The server changes levels no problems .. doesnt ever crash. It is the client that occasionally crashes so as far as the logs, nothing stands out as being bad with the exception of a couple missing textures from a couple maps that are not listed due to teh missing textures.

    I got through several switches tonight with no problems, and that is what is so weird is sometimes it crashes the client and sometimes not. The mutes do not all play nice with each other of course and for several reasons. Base mutator wise everything is solid, if a couple mutes that clash with each other are voted in basically all that happens is some of the weapons, vehicles wont show up in game. depending upon which one is listed before the other, In ut2votes case it lists alphabetically as does the game so what ever mute has the closest letter to "a" will have priority over anything else. Eg. excessives will overwrite my own weapons because my weapons start with p. I used to get around this by making my own game type command lines. Since ut2vote won't let me I will re write my mutators here in the next couple weeks.

    As far as the handling of the mutes I haven't once crashed on account of mutes not getting along. freon I must say is my bigest suspect though as I said it isn't the only time it crashes. The reason it is suspect to me though is because I have read about several issues with it and ut2vote. Maybe it could make it unstable even if it is not in use?

    in other words could freon make it unstable when going from say DM to CTF?

    I hate the idea of removing it due to the fact that I have a lot of fun playing it. If I cannot resolve it then that will have to be tested of course, I have not removed freon as of yet mainly because it did not seem to be the central reason for the client crash.

    what i would try:

    make your vote, disconnet from the server, let it switch and hopefully crash the other clients, and then reconect after the switch.

    And of course, post the server.log.

    regarding your own mutators, if it's just small modifications, it shouldn't matter. If you play around with the replication, it could cause al kinds of wired stuff, if not done carefully.

    So what i understand now is, that there is no way to securely replicate the client-crashes?

    Is it allways all clients getting crashed? And is it allways with maps missing some textures?

    TAM and freon are wide spread. Also they have some small issues, they should work well with ut2vote. They allways did, and we dind't hear anything bad for a long time afair.

    The best would be finding a way to safely replicate the crashes, so we can check it on our own.

    Maybe if you post the servers data, i could check it on my own, if i find some time... (2 weeks until wotlk ^^).

    edit: oh and a well known thing: make shure, you anly have the u-files in the system-dir, you really need. especially no old versions. And double check the server.ini for mistakes like adding a package for an older version of a mut than called by ut2vote. Maybe post your server.ini...

    I will check to make sure there are no un used mutes on the system, though I really doubt there are due to it being a brand new install etc (OS and Game). This is also pretty much first run situation. The 2k4.ini is clean from serverPackages other then ut2vote and whatever it adds or subtracts.

    I am running server colors and anti-tcc as server actors, I haven't tried in anyway to add these to ut2vote maybe this is the cause?

    I basically just ignored them as they always run and are actors rather then pushed to the client. Maybe this is my mistake I don't really know with regards to that. I just remembered this consequently so you know.

    i'm only talking about the server-system, just to be clear ;)

    antitcc needs a serverpackage, server-colors not, afaik.

    Running antitcc as a serveractor normaly makes the serverpackage obsolete, but it can also be run as a mutator, so who knows...

    on which OS is the server running?

    I'm still waiting for a server-log :)

    Another question: as the crash happens, will the server cleanly switch to the new mod? or are there wired things on the server happening?

    If we can't find things in the logs, and the ini looks ok so far, and if you can't replicate the behaviour safely, there is little chance, to find the reasons for it... :(

    I do not have this listed in the ServerPackages and it does suggest you do that in the anti-tcc readme even if you are running as a actor. This may be the issue, as well as freon.

    um in answer to your questions

    OS is xp-pro fully patched

    yes when the client crashes the server changes without issue as I mentioned in the prior posts. The server is bulletproof it is only effecting the client. If the client chooses to re-join the server they can do so with no issue/no crash/no nada. In other words this ONLY effects the client, not the server the server just keeps on running like a happy little camper with the new game, mutes, whatever.

    actually this is why I am here, because there is no way to replicate it over and over. There is no set point in which it will crash the client. It is a serious mystery why this has been happening. I am still suspicious of freon, I have read at least 20 posts of people having issues with it and ut2vote.

    So I have a couple things to test today... 1 being adding the anti-tcc mute to the ServerPackages 2 being removing freon.

    I can only hope that one of these 2 will cure this situation.

    I am by no means a nube to ut2vote, I have run several versions, helped to set it up correctly for several admin friends of mine, as well as help to fix the half bot/bot not dying error of ut2vote because of the packages being wack from nube admins.

    Again I was hoping something would stand out and hoping proasm would respond in some manner since he wrote it. Thanks for trying to help man it is appreciated.

    got it... it seems that freon was indeed the problem. I have successfully changed every gametype several times with no crashes on my client.

    I'm curious, what are you telling the guys regarding that problem?
    Personally i thought it's a timing problem, but if you found another reason, please tell us :)

    Nice that you could make it up to freon :) Client crashes are alwasy hard to replicate, and regarding to the error-messages it can be a million things. But maybe the freon-programmers know a reason for that wired behaviour...

    Would be nice, if you could leave some words on the "half bot/bot not dying"-thing and what you found it's up to ;)

    OKay.. so it is my experience that 99% of the time it is because the admins suffering from this simply have not read the manual.

    This is one of the only mutes in all of ut with a "manual". Admins generally read readmes and they are very short and easy in comparison to set up. You can almost always chaulk it up to them removing gametypes and only leaving the ones they intend to ude instead of leaving them in there and setting hide vote to true.

    I haven't ever seen a situation where it involves tic rates. I have only had this issue be unresolved one time, every single other time it is because they don't read the manual and they just set it up they way they think it should be. The manual is very specific as to the proper set up and should be deemed biblical for this mute.

    here is a link to the last guy I tried to help out with this problem, look at his ini you will see exactly what I am referring to. It is a great example of what can happen when you do not read the manual.

    this is the single most common problem imo, beyond that the software does what it is supposed to do w/ couple minor exceptions. like my issue with freon being the main variety. My ini should be set up pretty much properly Though there is one mistake in it, that being how I am dealing with the chainsaw. I have it in every game type and it should be in all but two actually one now that freon is out of the mix. I am not having any issues but I am going to fix it anyways just to keep **** clean.

    ADMINS~ the single most important thing with regards to setting up ut2vote is you read what the manual says.. Yes manual, yes it is long but that is necessary as ut2vote is biting off a huge chunk of the game interface. It is designed a specific way and should be treated as SOFTWARE not a cheap little mutator.

    But we also had those wired happenings with absolut correct inis, and we had a version of ut2vote with a map-loading timer (the timing i meant), which was fixing it. On the bad side, it seemed to cause other problemes, so it was removed somewhen...

    can you think of a reason why 2 packages would not push? the rest have no problems but the 2 packages trickle out of my server rather then my redirect. I have them both loaded on the redirect, my berlin server uses them np but for some reason if they are voted in they will not push to the client. I have tried exiting and restarting the download like fifty times and always the same thing. even weirder.. The one of the mutators has a texture package and the texture package pushes with no issue but the .u does not lol. This one is new and to my knowledge is only with regards to 5.7. I have not ever had this issue in the past. packages are correctly placed everything is on both the server and redirect and there is absolutely no chance of a version mismatch.

    this ist mostly the case, if the server runs on linux, and the programmer didn't mind about the difference in using capitel letters between linux and windows.

    you should have a look at the mutator-files, and look for the exact calling of the package in it, and check, if the redirect has the same typing. especially look for capitel-letters.

    i'm sorry, but i don't get the point.

    you say, the redirect works for one server, but not for the other?

    if you are absolute shure about the writing (and i would tripple-check that one), you may also check the rights of those files.

    if it still doesn't work, you may use the LAN-switch, to speedup the download. But i'm shure, you'll get it working ;)
