General Protection Fault Error - HELP!!!

  • Two Factor Authentication is now available on BeyondUnreal Forums. To configure it, visit your Profile and look for the "Two Step Verification" option on the left side. We can send codes via email (may be slower) or you can set up any TOTP Authenticator app on your phone (Authy, Google Authenticator, etc) to deliver codes. It is highly recommended that you configure this to keep your account safe.

Now, I know this question has been asked here before. Unfortunately for me, I can't find out what the remedy was. So, I'm forced to ask again. I'm getting a general protection fault error. It only happens when I click on my desktop to play UT with the shortcut that points to the .exe file. But when I right click on a file and select 'play this unreal level', it plays fine. Here's the error:

Init: Initialized moving brush tracker for Level CityIntro.MyLevel
Log: Bound to UWeb.dll
ScriptLog: Team 0
ScriptLog: Login: Player
Log: Possessed PlayerPawn: TMale2 CityIntro.TMale0
Critical: UViewport::Exec
Critical: UWindowsViewport::Exec
Critical: APlayerPawn::execConsoleCommand
Critical: UObject::processEvent
Critical: (TMale2 CityIntro.TMale0, Function Engine.PlayerPawn.SShot)

Critical: UEngine::InputEvent
Critical: UWindowsViewport::CauseInputEvent
Critical: UWindowsViewport::UpdateInput
Critical: UInput::ResetInput
Critical: UInput::Init
Critical: UGameEngine::Init
Critical: InitEngine
Exit: Executing UObject::StaticShutdownAfterError
Exit: Executing UWindowsClient::ShutdownAfterError
Log: DirectDraw End Mode
Exit: Exiting.
Uninitialized: Name subsystem shut down
Uninitialized: Log file closed, 09/20/03 10:12:15

What causes this error, and can I fix it? It's obviously not hardware related as I thought before, and I've done all the fixes I could from re-installing the software to upgrading the video cards to stopping a bunch of processes in my task manager. None of them worked.

When you reinstalled the game, did you delete the old copy first?

Try removing the UnrealTournament.ini and User.ini file from the System directory. Then start UT again. (You can keep them back up, just move them to the unreal tournament root directory, or some other location. You can also just rename them to something like unrealtournament1.ini or 1user.ini, which ever.

Try to start the game up using that link.

Also, make sure the shortcut points to the right direction.

Oh, for to ask. What does the GPF actually say when it pops up? Can you get a screenshot of that?

Yes, I un-installed the game and removed the old copy as well from the UnrealTournament Folder off my C: drive....and here's the error:

But here's an interesting remedy I have yet to try - and it's the first one that has made any sense so far...I got this off of google newsgroups:

Just a shot in the dark, are you using a logitech cordless internet
keyboard? If so, the "iTouch" software is the problem. All you have to do is set it not to load on startup, don't uninstall it leave the link for it in the star menu so it's there if you need it. To disable in startup: Click Start/run, type msconfig, click ok, click "startup" tab, find iTouch, uncheck box, Click apply/ok/restart voila ut runs. If your not using a logitech keyboard, sorry, cant help ya.

It just so happens....I use a Logitech MX Cordless Duo. Heh.
I'll try that first, then if that doesn't work, I'll try your idea.

Ehmm...
Howcome it does? Normally you click to download and you're being redirected to the beyondunreal download system where you can pick a mirror to download from.
Right-click won't work.

On planetunreal you click the download link and you're being redirected to fileplanet.

But to the forums?
No idea why that happens.
You sure you click the right link?

Why not call it Ut99, like all the other noobs. :rolleyes: :lol:

Well you see, the thing is... it's not just new people using the term ut99 :(
It's also those old timers. And I mean, the OLD timers.

:( snif..

Me? I've played the ut demo when it was released, bought the game halfway 2000. Been playing unreal since september '99.

Could I be considered as an old timer?

Oh HELL no!

(and certainly no love below!)

OH HELL NO!

AAAAAAAAAAAH know you'd like to thank your **** don't stank
But lean a little bit closer
See that roses really smell like boo-boo-boo
Yeah, roses really smell like boo-boo-boo

Well she's got a hotty body, but her attitude is potty
When I met her at a party she was hardly acting naughty
I said "Would you call me?"
She said "Pardon me, are you ballin'?"
I said "Darling, you sound like a prostitute pausing"
Oh so you're one them freaks, get geeked at the sight of ATM receipts
But game been peeped, dropping names she's weak
Trickin' off this bitch is lost
Must take me for a geek a quick way to eat
A neat place sleep, a rent-a-car for a week, a trick for a treat
Now go on the raw sex, my AIDS test is flawless
Regardless, we don't want to get involved with no lawyers
And judges just to hold grudges in a courtroom
I wanna see ya support bra not support you!

I know you'd like to thank your **** don't stank
But lean a little bit closer
See that roses really smell like boo-boo-boo
Yeah, roses really smell like boo-boo-boo

Better come back down to Mars
Girl, quit chasin' cars
What happens when the dough get so low
Bitch, you ain't that fine
No way.. no way.. no way

Crazy bitch
Bitch, stupid ass bitch
Old punk ass bitch, old dumbass bitch
A bitch is a bitch, just a bitch
