Wow Steyr, fanatic much? UE3 is a great engine and all, but it doesn't do outdoor to the extent that CryEngine and Gambryo do; not by a long shot. I mean, I run Oblivion with AA that looks comparable to Crysis (though CryEngine most certainly has the superior lighting system) with a better framerate (and crysis can't run AA or it dies). Large scale games simply have low FPS, that's the way it is.

I'm most definitely looking forward to Fallout 3

The same can be said about just about any game. You shouldn't be messing with graphics replacement packs if your system isn't beefy enough to run them.

Oblivion has wonderful, modular mod support and its active modding community has greatly increased the replayability of the game. I've never heard of "big FPS hit" ever being a consistent issue with mods.

On a side note, why do you always manually sign off your posts, dragonfliet?

I don't talk about cryengine because I don't know a lot about it. Never played crysis. I do have to say their fire effects look great though. But you aren't going to need a lot of trees and stuff in the wasteland of Fallout 3. You'll need primarily two things: Sand and Rocks. And while Fallout will be large scale, there won't be many NPCs or detailed meshes in the wasteland. That's all going to be in the cities. And UE3 and Source can both do cities quite well.

This brings me to point two. Gamebryo is really slow for some reason, my best guess is it uses the CPU for way too much stuff. I could be indoors, looking at the damn floor, and STILL get around 10 FPS on morrowind.

    I get around 25 on UT3.

Now I can't blame it all on Gamebryo. A lot of problems with Morrowind had to do with programming issues that could be the result of bad programmers at Bethesda. For example, NPCs did not have a pathway system. The CPU was constantly making them wander around by doing collision checks and whatnot. Not very smart.

I hope bethesda and gamebryo come through on that though. And I'm going to buy and enjoy Fallout 3 anyway, even if it lags and I can't use a ****ton of mods on it. I must say, while bethesda's games lack in the technical development area, their gameplay is actually quite good.

If you're getting 10 fps in Morrowind, then it's probably time to upgrade. PC games are optimized for a specified spectrum of configurations. If your system falls below this threshold, well, you're out of luck.

Second, I've never heard the phrase "pathway system". I think what you're trying to describe is a node-based pathfinding system, which Bethesda has, in the past, said they're avoiding. Even with node-based pathfinding, you still need to run collision detection "and whatnot" per frame.

At any rate, I don't know what weird, oddball configuration would let you run UT3 better than Morrowind, but ehh... you're probably an extreme exception. Maybe your CPU is throttling?

but with a node-network you would only have to search a smaller amount of potentially dangerous objects and that could be signifcantly faster.

However Unreal (and Crysis) don't have to check anything beyond the players' immediate surroundings, unlike Fallout et al which do appear to keep the npc's of the entire world active. (although for Morrowind that meant having them stand around in the same spot for ages)

10 FPS after mods. I got at least 60 without.

I've also run more mods on ut2k4 than I did on morrowind, I'm talking hundreds of new weapons in a single match, randomized, just to make things less predictable. I maxed out players and did a CLAW2 arena match, with god knows how many damn proxies jumping about (if you don't know what I'm talking about, get ChaosUT2). I couldn't get that game to slow down. Loading time with all those weapons was bad, but once the match started it was just as fast as it was without mods.

The slowdown on morrowind seemed to be independent of whether the mod data was actually being used or not. I'm not sure how or why, but it was.

**** knows what mods you had. I had over 65 mods on Morrowind back when I played it on a P4, Geforce 5500 FX system.

I didnt have a framerate issue when I put more mods on. And some of them were texture/mesh replacers and all sorts.
