Been awhile since I have had much time to experiment with mapping, but today I did some more with low poly terrain in UT2k4 with shadow textures rendered with Terragen.

I used real world topographical data of 2400.623 meters by 2400.623 meters square area, and made it to proper scale in game.

First screen shot is a model of the map I placed in the map, showing some of the real world data I used and a red pointer showing the players location

Second and third are me driving round taking scenic shots.

Fourth, another vehicle, this one more clearly shows the ground as it looks upclose :D

Even on the old system I am currently using, frame rates are good, at an average decent level throughout the map.

The old UT99 editor messes up large imported brush textures, realigning them is a lot of work, the new editor for UT2k4 has Planar mapping that automatically aligns textures how they need to be with a single click, see attached pic.

Code or find something like that for UT99 and terrain maps for Inf would be a dime a dozen.

Right now I am putting together a tutorial for UT2k4.
