Go for BitDefender Total Security, it's the best AV ever made. I had many troubles, but since I got this one installed I ran 3 years with no problems. I only had one maleware and when I contacted the tech support, they sent me a small application to get some info about it and when I sent them the log they released a global update that removes this maleware. Now it comes with anti-maleware.

    Block all ads.
    Use NoScript.
If NoScript is too annoying, at least use Flashblock and disable Java in your browser.
Obviously keep your browser up to date.

Only use some one else's PC, when you cruise the web ;)

PS. Do car manufactures make you buy seatbelts every year?

    The fake antivirus virus.
    It's a beeyatch!
It looks like a real virus scanner but really does a lot of damage.
Sometimes they'll offer to clean it for you if you pay them. (Ransomware) They'll disable or alter your WINS or DNS settings so you never "get out".
These buggas will hack into sites and attach themselves to html or other docs. It's not just pr0n sites. Very diabolical and brilliant in how the virus protects itself.

Fixing compyooterz is what I do for a living and I'd rather reimage a machine than waste a whole weekend tracking this garbage down. You can use a variety of "cleaners" and never truly get rid of this.

It's nasty and if you see someting like this, it's too late:

    If you never install.
Then you never have to reinstall.

ok but you said "snake oil."
snake oil implies a product that does nothing or at the very least does not do what it was intended to as sold. anti-virus programs actually work and they do exactly what they were intended to do. just because the virus protection game is one of cat and mouse doesn't mean that they are anything like snake oil.

having an AV program is much better for your computer than not having one at all. just because they are playing catchup to the newest viruses doesn't mean they are useless. if you're smart about how you browse the internet and use email then you shouldn't ever have to worry about the newest viruses anyway.

I haven't used an Antivirus for going on 5 years now. You might be shocked to find I have not had a virus, either. Smart browsing practices trump Antivirus 90% of the time.

Now, if you're talking malware, something that your Antivirus really sucks at protecting against, I might agree. Having something like Malware Bytes that you run periodically is a good idea. Malware has a much higher chance of causing you problems today than viruses do if you aren't a 90 year old Grandma who clicks on every ad banner in existence.

I do keep an installation of MSE on hand to run a scan every month or two, but it's not running all the time (because I don't need it to).

    On your web browser.
Go to "tools", "settings", "viruses" click the box that says "block all".

I read this and the first thing that came to my mind was the thought of Sir David Attenborough stalking the great internet jungle trying to document the latest wild malware in its natural environment
