    @UN17:
That's awesome! Like the real deal.

    Some pics:

Can you also make this bigger "muzzle light" shine, like in the first picture? I mean gegob made this flashlight blinding light, maybe you can make a similar, not blinding effect.

BTW, the huge point at where the laser hits looks a bit to huge I think.

Man now release that thing and Lemon should run the Night mutator on his server again.

It depends on what kind of laser is being used. From what I read, those images with the bright lights are actually a high powered class 3 laser. The lasers in INF don't strike me as a class 3 signalling laser but a regular class 2 visible.

If it were even possible to "stretch" a mesh like Geogob is researching, that still leaves the problem of the laser coming out of your neck, shoulder, etc, depending on your stance. Unless Geogob does find that code to detect the player's hand attachpoint in realtime. Then the only last factor is lag. The system would work, it would look ok, it would come from your hand (or the gun's muzzle flash area as Yurch suggested), but it would still be one heck of a laggy line jumping around all over the place at 1 update per second or however fast your net is. (Offline it would look awesome for you, but bad for your bots because bots always have conefire on.) If you could live with all those caveats, I can make this a reality and release it :)

Still, I'd rather release just the laser trails. I could have the laser "beam" clientside only though if the muzzlepoint could be found. If you can find the stats for the lasers used in the Mk23 Socom, Sig551 laser, M16A4 laser (ie. What class, IR capabilities, max effective range, screenshots) that would be mighty helpful!

BTW: Those big white circles from your 1st picture don't look like they come from the laser. I think those are IR blinkers used by US forces so they don't shoot each other. They're worn on the shoulder and blink intermittently. Nope, I checked in Photoshop and the laser lines to lead back to those circles. Rather strange how the beam doesn't appear for several feet then it appears. Well, that big circle effect can be done. Geogob has it in his Night Vision :)

Beam needs particules in the air to be seen (unless it's a wavelength where air is not totally transparent).

Maybe that's the key not to have the laser come out of the player's shoulder or where ever. Make it visible about 1 meter in front of player, with a fade in effect. Just a thought. But I have to find a way to stretch a skeletal mesh, if any, first.

I can do that. If that's how it is in reality, that would save you the trouble of finding a hand/barrel point to attach. I can just spawn it 1 foot infront of the player :p BUT, if you look at the screenshots, the lasers are clearly visible right from their lens. There is no 2-4 foot dead zone like in that first screenshot. Maybe it has to do with the intensity of the laser, who knows!

Geo, you could just import a single second mesh of 100x the length, so that UN17 can use that to predictively 'fill in the gaps' for long ranges.

Although, UN should cap the length of the line at some point just for sanity's sake. Nothing more unrealistic than crashing.

Fading in the laser from a few feet out will minimize any apparent discrepancies with the barrel axis, and you can probably even make it look natural.

"Blur" (and interpolate!) the line in the same manner as the wall-effect for that overzealous coder look that the ladies love. (You probably will want to shorten the timeframe :p)

    Yurch. Brilliantly simple idea.

Edit: nice, for the first time in a long while I feel we are having a developement discussion in the developement forum. That feels good.

I just would wish the "developement" would go a bit further than just IR laser and laser effects.

I guess you know what I mean.

Problem about starting the laser away from the emitter is that this would not be how it looks. It is not as if the air is magically bereft of dust particles in the near proximity of a soldier, rather the other way around. So the beam should start at the soldier, thinning out the farther away it gets. The last thing might solve the problem in the other end, but I have no idea how far away a laser beam can be seen with NVG. Maybe someone has one at home for testing?

Hope noone seriously makes the laser simply visible in the "normal" view.

The IR laser in the NV view is constantly, from start to end. See the pictures I posted above.

Not really. Absolutely really not. The IR lasers they use, from the looks of it, can have ranges way over 20 thousand feets if they use wavelengths where the air is transparent (e.g. no water/CO2 absorption). The only problem is divergeance, but with IR it's fairly easy to have good optics that are diffraction limited and have a system with optimal divergeance. In the pictures above, the collimation seems pretty good.

The only factor that might fade the laser are divergeace, molecular/atomic absorption or scattering. If the wavelenght is well chosen to be in an atmospheric window, your laser will be visible even at 10 km. Depending on the divergeance, the spot will be bigger, but it will still reach 10 km.

Hint: Ideas get done when they are simple, elegant, and devoid of 9 page caveats. :p

    I treat Psychomorph's suggestions like EULA's...

    Please don't tempt him.

That being said developement is best done when something is started, ideas are great but without something to start/work from they're little more than a wishlist.

If I would be able to do it, I would have made it years ago .
Wiki UScript translated in german would help allready, at least for few minutes untill I get headache again and f*cking quit .

BTW, I don't get the "9 page" statement. I can summon all up in few sentences, but it seems to be not "elegant" enough. At least people don't take it serious like an EULA.

I had no idea of the power of the lasers, but was mainly reasoning along the lines of: IR visible = reflections in particles in the air = loss of energy in beam. I will happily belive your statement about the range.

Yes, you are right, but only a little fraction of the light is reflected. Of course, if you are in a sandstorm and do not see 1 meter in front of you, your laser will probably not make it to 10 km ;)
