Whoa just realized that my registration date bears some Historical significance to my Great State.

The first state to execute by lethal injection. Now as being native Texan, I know we have executed more criminals than any other state in the Union, we also have had the highest number of wrongful executions, research.

Which obviously brings me to the next point. If we as a society deem it necessary to take the life of an individual for his actions, in most cases knowingly actions, then as wrongful executions do take place what kind of compensatory measure are taken to justify the execution? Do the parties involved get to execute someone else? What is the check against this?

My own opinion is that some people do deserve to die for their actions, but with all the bureaucratic tape and money it takes to execute someone and the time involved can't we spend our resources more resourcefully? The system is so concentrated with bull**** that the system is not effective, not just in my state but all the states. Maybe we should move to an eye for an eye system…dunno? Just seems rather backwards the way it is, to go to all the trouble, money, and time involved in executing someone who is not worth ****.

It beats me why they have to keep the poor sods hanging around on Death Row for years before they actually execute them.

Take them out the back, and off with their heads.

I fully second that. they got sentenced to death, not 15+ years of life in prison, followed by death.
if the convicts don't appeal, and plead guilty, they should be executed the next morning.

While I personally believe that some people deserve to die or, in more cases, we (humans, society, whatever) would be better off without them, I can derive from this fact no right of an institution or individual person to actively take steps in that matter. I might tolerate a misaction by a victim, but assuming a legal right is sheer arrogance.

But besides this, I personally - while fearing death naturally - consider death a relief in an intellectual way.
Death penalty is supposedly carried out in a humane way. I have heard of errors during executions though (and why shouldn't there be) making the execution an even more unpleasant experience for the victim than intended (assuming that is possible).
For instence, the lethal injection should be put into a vein leading towards the heart, anaesthetizing the victim and then paralyzing the heart, leading to a 'soft' death. If, however, as reported the injection is put into a vein leading away from the heart, the paralyzing takes much longer and reaches the heart LAST, after the body has been paralyzed which is NOT a pleasant experience.
And I don't even want to mention the gas chamber.

I also don't see how an injection is a more pleasant way to die than shooting a bullet into my head. I'd choose a headshot over an injection (or ANY method of execution practiced in the US) at any time.

Well, actually I believe it should be messy. As I see it the current "humane" ways of killing a person are intended to be less unpleasant for the culprits (NOT the criminal executed, those who do it of course) rather than for the victim.
Those people would like to believe it's not so bad as pointing a gun at someone and shooting him. It's not Killing, it's just Ending a criminal subject's life. If you fail to see a difference you're just an uncivilized barbarian.
