YA! It's alive! The ceremony was a success! It nearly wasn't you know, do you have any idea how hard it is to find a virgin these days?
And then there was the blood, have you ever tried to make blood stay in the shape of a pentagram? It's not easy, floors aren't as level as you'd think, so it all sort of runs off in one direction.
I could have let it cool off a little, I suppose, congeal a bit, then it would have been easier, but if I were to do that then I might as well offer our Lord and Master cold gravy, and he doesn't strike me as the gravy type.

Anyway, enough of that. I now have a Nile album, "Amongst The Catacombs Of Nephren-Ka", and it is awesome. It's old, I know, but better late than never!
So far my favourite song is "Ramses Bringer of War", the intro thingy is just awesome, followed by one I don't know the name of yet, but the start has what sounds like a marching army with chariots and stuff.

Hmm.... an undead thread, resurrected by an arcane ceremony involving sacrificial virgins and blood offerings to the dark one.... could this thread be any more Metal?

Edit: I have found a way to make it more metal: Headbanging, fist clenching, ugly fat guys, wearing studded leather.

lolol First blood betrayals
Sweet.
My two favorites are Cannibal Corpse and Nile. I've been trying to find "Annihilation of the Wicked" in stores but can't!
Anyways, anyone got any suggestions of any new (or old) bands that are in the vein of these two?
Gonna check out tomcat's list...

I don't know how into the overall project everyone here would be, but pretty much everybody in here should check out "They Aren't All Beautifull" by maudlin of the Well. Ultimately it's a progressive/avant-garde project, but that song is ridiculously intense doom metal.

I am not a fan of maudlin of the well. I like Arcturus and Solefald more.

«MechikTaj»:

Check out: Decapitated, Death, Obituary, Morbid Angel and Gorguts.

Arcturus is pretty intensely awesome stuff... I'm hugely into most projects Garm has been associated with.

Also, I add emphasis to check out Death. Checking out Death is one of those 'do it right away, no now, no rather yesterday' things. Better yet, when you were in the womb.

The stuff he'd be more interested in I imagine would be one of Death's earlier CDs.

My current suggestion for Death Metal would be Suffocations latest release, I love that CD.

Lately I've been listening to alot of Arsis' material, it's very in depth music, especially the "Celebration of Guilt" album if you're into melodic death stuff.

Imho Gorguts last 2 albums are the best death metal albums ever but especially obscura is not suitable for allot of normal death metal fans.

Moogleth returns! (or at least... this is the first post I've seen since the forums came back >.>)

I purchased the Hypocrisy album "The Final Chapter" today. I'm not enjoying it quite as much as I'd expected to, I think it'll probably grow on me though.

Could someone point me to some good examples of Melodic Death? I don't think I've heard any before, but it sounds like someting I'd like.

Oh I could definitely do that :D.
In fact with this post, I may edit it over time, and add new bands and what not, so this may seem pretty small at the moment.

Now I assume you're familiar with In Flames and Children of Bodom, so I won't bother with them. For now at least.

We'll start off with
-Scar Symmetry Myspace This is a band which in my eyes sort of epitomizes the meaning of Melodic Death Metal.
-Kalmah Myspace This is on the heavier end of the Melodeath spectrum, pretty much everything this band pumps out is gold and often quite alot of black metal fans enjoy it is well.
-Soilwork Myspace One of those bands that more or less decreased over time depending on your tastes, I'm quite a fan of their earlier stuff, they're fairly similar at times to Scar Symmetry.
-Arch Enemy Myspace one of my favourites, and in tomcats eyes, an extremely mediocre band :p. You may like them.

If you're looking on the more technical side,
-Arsis Myspace American band, they've become more brutal since their first release.
-Amoral myspace A finnish band, lot of thrashy elements, and occaisionally some interesting/quirky riff ideas come through.

Seconded.

Also check out:

Mygrain - MySpace - Excellent band from Finland.
They sound like all the previous mentioned bands blended together. They're also better than most of those bands*. :p

Wintersun - MySpace - Definitely one of my favourite bands. Can't wait for the new album. :)

The Duskfall - MySpace - Pretty generic, but still better than most.

*Except Amoral.

@Fokker:

For the best melodic death, check out Dark Tranquility, (early) In Flames, At The Gates, Edge of Sanity and Amon Amarth. Those are pretty much the ones I enjoyed most when I was at that stage. Also, do yourself a favor check out Dissection. It is Melodic Black Metal, but it's pretty close to what you're looking for, and it kicks ass.
Wintersun is not melodic death, btw.
