I just got a new system over the weekend. It's an AMD Athlon 900mhz with 256megs RAM. I also had an ASUS V6800 Deluxe put into it (the Geforce 256 DDR). I'm using the newest nVidia drivers (5.32). For some reason, UT ALWAYS crashes within a few minutes after I start playing. It doesn't matter what video mode I use, even in software rendering mode. I've downloaded the latest bios for my AMD 750 board, and I'm also using the latest bios for my geforce. Can someone help me out? I've tried running every version of UT (including 4.13, 4.20), and nothing works. I tried using DirectX 7.0 and then DirectX 7.0a and nothing will get it to work. I even tried downloading the 0.8 version of the d3ddrv.dll file on UT's page.

Does anyone know what I can do? I'd appreciate any help.

oouch.
I dont even get those anymore. I used to get them a hell of a lot with the original unreal. Odd though, cause I only got it when i lagged like a m0. Hmm..try uninstalling then reinstalling ut. If nothing happens, call them up. I have an 800AMD, A-bit motheboard and 128 ram. Works just fine. Better then ever i must say

You have (real) video card DA... a Voodoo

granted, you got the POS one, the 3500. :)

(I'm just kidding about the "real" card guys - lighten up. We all know UT works better with Voodoo's)

Damn - just typical innit - you get a dream PC and it won't work with UT :(
I'm pretty sure that the problem lies with your GeForce type-beast. Try contacting Nvidia tech support for help.

I would also try the older 5.22 detonators and the manufacturer's drivers from Asus.

Thanks for all of your help, guys. I'm gonna keep trying different things until eventually, HOPEFULLY, something will work. I already used the ASUS drivers before the NVidia ones, but I'll go ahead and try the 5.22 drivers and see what happens. Once again, I appreciate it.

When I first got my GF2, I was gettting lockups (not GPFs) after several minutes of play in all D3D games. Leadtek tech support recommended that I turn off side-band addressing, even though my motherboard supposedly supported it. Since doing that, I don't believe I've had a single lockup.

I realize that our symptoms and systems (I run a P2 450 (soon to be P3 800) on a 440BX motherboard) are somewhat different, but this might worth a try.

I tried 5.22, and sideband was already disabled. Once again, thanks for your suggestions, though. At this point, it seems like I only have two options left: completely strip the computer down, rip out everything, put it in a pile, and start a bonfire... or stop playing UT altogether. Seems rather drastic, doesn't it? Heh..

Mine was locking up in ALL 3D FPS games, untill I checked out the Tweak guide at www.tweak3d.net

It turns out, I had set some bios settings wrong in the first place, and had a setting wrong in the GeForce options.

Here's what I think was my problem, and what the settings should be:

Video Bios Shadow: Disabled
Video Bios Cacheable: Disabled
In the D3D setup part, make sure the "Use ## system memory in PCI mode" or something like that... set it to 0.

Actually, I recently installed the 5.32 drivers, and was having lockups again, and it had reset that value to 23, when I changed it to 0 they all went away.

For me I didn't get General Protection Faults, it just locked up my system, and looped the sound that was playing when it locked up... But it's worth a try for you.

I had the same prob with my Gforce. First, go read the Ut tweak guide at www.tweaked3d.net (especially follow the registry hints!!)
After doing that, make the following :

Copy the D3Ddrv.dll file from patch 405B to any folder. Install patch 413 (maybe 420 works too, i havent tried yet) and put the .dll file from 405 to 413. Seems like the d3ddrv.dll above patch 405B aint good for nvidia users...

good luck

I was going to disable Video Bios Shadow and Video Bios Cacheable, but I can't seem to find them anywhere in my bios.

Any suggestions?

Once again, thank you for all of your help. I just finished ripping everything out of the computer again to make sure nothing's conflicting or causing problems. I'm almost positive the problem lies somewhere within the motherboard, the GeForce, my BIOS and setup, and DirectX 7.0. Sadly, though, nothing will seem to work yet. I've formatted a lot recently, and re-installed Windows 98, but that doesn't seem to help either. Ditto with clean installs of display drivers and clean installs of UT. Also, it seems HL and CS are having problems that I missed earlier, too, even in OpenGL.

If this sounds familiar or you have any other ideas, please let me know. I'm getting desperate! =)

Thanks
