Military Small Arms of the 20th Century says:
15mm Steyr AMR Anti-Material Rifle
----------------------------------
Steyr-Mannlicher GmbH
15mm flechette
Length overall: approx. 2m (6.6 ft)
Weight empty: approx 20kg (44 lbs)
Barrel: 1200mm (47.25" smoothbore)
Magazine: 5 or 8 shot
Muzzle velocity: 1500m/s (4920 fps)
This is a heavyweight precision rifle intended for the attack of vulnerable targets such as vehicles, aircraft, fuel and supply dumps, radar installations, and communications centers. It can be dismantled into two parts for carriage by two men. The weapon is a semiautomatic of bullpup form, in which plastics and light alloys have been used to reduce the weight.
(Gryph: and yet it still came out to 44 lbs!) The long recoil principle of operation is used, bolt and barrel recoiling locked together across the magazine; the bolt is then rotated and held while the barrel runs out to battery. The forward movement of the barrel leaves the empty case on the bolt face, and it is ejected clear. The bolt then runs forward to chamber a fresh round and lock. Recoil is reduced by a muzzle brake, and the barrel runs in a hydro-pneumatic recoil sleeve forming the front of the receiver. The rifle is supported by a bipod and an elevation-adjustable rear monopod. The level of recoil is approximately that of a .358 sporting rifle. The magazine is inserted obliquely from the right side; various sizes of the magazine are under test. The cartridge is made partly of synthetic material and the projectile is a 36g (1.27 oz) 5.5mm fin-stabilized flechette of tungsten. It has a probable effective range of 1500/2000m depending on the type of target engaged. At 800m range the flechette can penetrate 40mm of armor steel. The AMR is currently under evaluation in several countries.
Whew!
