Console editing?

Well Clockwork, even though I think it's safe to assume you aren't around anymore, Editing on the console does already exist. As UncleThrusday informs me, Tony Hawk already had a level editor. More along the lines of FPS ediors however, we now have Pariah to look forward to, and it is not only Unreal based, it's a Digital Extremes game, and it does have an editor for consoles.

Yes, you have been able to make your own parks since THPS2. But, they're small and limited compared to the courses the designers make on their workstations; especially as opposed to PC editing, where people are sometimes basically able to work with much of the same tools as the game designers (just not the source code).

I've seen some IMPRESSIVE user-made maps and such for Unreal Tournament, UT2003, and UT2004, as well as stuff for QUake, Half-Life and its mods, etc.

Hell, the whole mod/mapping/skinning/model making community wouldn't exist without the tools provided for, or available for when not included, for PC games.

you say place and drop like it's a bad thing. I can't really imagine what else you could use that easy enough for the avg gamer. remember, these things have to be able to offer broad appeal. even if they figured out how to get the UnEd into a console, what normal gamer is going to want to try and figure that beast out? A lot fo people don't even really mess with Smackdown CAW, and that's pretty easy!

Another good point to bring up on editing in the new UC2, is that making patches, logos, ect. will probably happen, since that's what Bungie is doing with Halo 2. Beyond that, I don't think console editing will go any further.

IF they make consoles with native PC link it might happen. Editing using the console will never happen, editing using the PC and then importing your custom content over the console might happen.

And for the second option get hist way to home user, all developers have to make a kind of cross compatible plataform with native support for all consoles.

One more thing: think about hackers developing aimbots, wallhacks, speedhacks, DDOS exploits and so on.

^what he said..

On a positive note, modder's would atleast know what kind of system their mod would be running on. Since everyone would be running the same thing. Unless they make consoles with modable hardware. (i.e. you can upgrade it somewhat)... then again consoles would just be limited PC if thats the case....... blah blah

Don't forget Timesplitters and Timesplitters 2 both have level editors. There's a whole bunch of games with level editors, but they're all limited of course.

The problem with console editing is that you are limited to placing pre-built objects from the game in your map, which means that the variety of user made maps is greatly limited when you keep seeing the same objects in every map. Just look at that Pariah editor. You build some terrain, and place pre-existing objects around the map. That's gonna get old real quick because the amount of objects is limited and eventually you're gonna start seeing maps with recycled objects. That is bound to get boring.

PC editing on the other hand can be seen as creating new content from scratch. It's like having a blank sketch pad and every writing/drawing tool at your disposal. You have control over everything. Brand new 3d objects can be created in third party software such as 3ds Max, Maya, etc... There is no limit to the content you can create. You're not stuck with a limited amount of pre-built objects to work with. You are working with tools with infinite possibilites. You have pixel perfect precision on a PC. You can basically create a whole new game (total conversion) with the power of a PC.

Until consoles start running their games off of a hard drive, and have the abilility to transfer data to and from a PC, there is no real way to limitlessly edit them like you can with a PC game.

Map editing is pretty cool on consoles, but its always dumbed down from the PC products, and over simplified. Id much rather put my effort into a mod using Half Life's SDK that will get a lot more attention then making some Tony Hawk Underground Levels.
