In this post I am going to refer to one of the leaked beta's of UT2003, so if you think that will offend you or something, then don't read this. Otherwise, scroll down.

I posted this over at Epic's forums and pretty much got a lot of favorable support for the idea, so I figured I would post it in a larger community to see what you guys think.

Back in the original leaked version of UT2003, there was a pretty impressive sports-based single player mode. Actually, it was the single player mode, and they obviously nerfed it at a later time. The mode featured something like 24 teams (12 in an "Imperial" division and 12 more in a "Galactic" division). These 12 teams (per division) would compete in a 9-match season where you'd pretty much get to face most of the teams at some point. After that, the top 4 teams would move on to the playoffs.

You could do this in Domination, CTF or Bombing Run.

I think they should incorporate a kind of game-play concept like this into UT2007 in some way.

Here's my grand idea: First, you hit single playeron the menu. Then you can choose between "Ascension" (if they try putting a story iinto it) or "League Play" or something. If you go for the League Play, you can then choose the size of a season (teams involved, matches before playoffs, etc.). At that point, the game would randomly create the entire schedule for the regular season of play, and once all matches have been played, top teams will go into playoffs and then there's a championship and then you unlock stuff when you win.

It'd basically be like what you have in UT2004 right now, except you can proceed forward if you lose, and you can monitor and keep track of other team's stats and stuff.

I think it'd be a great thing for the game, mainly because anyone who will go for this mode will in turn be about as addicted to it as Koreans who have just been handed a new RPG game.

Thoughts?

Great Ideas, would be more fun in multiplayer where clans could have a "tournament" with time between matches. Of course the biggest problem with multiplayer would be getting everyone to attend, one thing they can do is that if you enter a tournament UT2007 would go into your system tray icon list and would spam you with notices MSN style when a match is about to begin.

Brilliant idea, but instead of calling these clan games a "tournament" you could call them a "ladder"...You should send this idea over to Clanbase ;)

Um.. you saying it'd be a good idea to have clans have games?

ERM...

Kind of...except it's all singleplayer and all done without using an Internet connection

Offline Single Player Clans. I take it this would be an extension over what 2k4 had already, as that's how it simply sounds. It's a good idea to have a very clan-focused idea within the single player, might help the community in the long run.

Sounds cool.

sure, but the casual gamer doesn't understand 'ladders'

He does (or at least is more likely to) know the concept of tournements as they are played in sports.

Heck ... the game is called unreal TOURNAMENT not unreal LADDERS for a reason ya know ;)

The only question is what kind of tournament should be played in singleplayer.
Something that's similar to say a football-season or something like a tennis-tournament or perhaps a choice of both ?

And in addition I'd wish the 'instant-action' to play more like the exhibition-matches in sportsgames. So instead of selecting teammates & opponents individually you'd pick them by team (ie : Iron Guard vs Bloodfists or playerteam vs Iron Guard).

UNREAL LADDER 2007

Got a certain ring to it don't you think...

Well, my original post was of course ironic and I wasn't saying the game should be called Unreal Ladders or whatever...Truegamers oringinal suggestion is good one for the single player campaign, but Sachiel suggesting that you should take this concept to multiplayer and have clans who play each other in scheduled games, the clan telling members when they have games through MSN or AIM (or IRC as is most common) struck me as funny as this is the way online clan ladders have worked for years.

It's a suggestion that has existed and been used in multiplayer games as long as I've been playing them, and its the way the clanbase ladders work.

Those also exist. In Europe as the Jolt Cups and Clanbase Cups (not to be confused with the CB ladder)

Instead of challenging clans yourself, your team is assigned to a group and maps and matchtimes are fixed

They just need to put the already existing HTML interfaces for those leagues into an UT menu

Would be good to not have to deal with 3rd parties for tournies. Maybe epic could have a 'team' that could facilitate leagues.. it's just one step up from server adminning really, and they can earn cash off it by using sponsors..

I think the wish for a more motivating SP has been already been posten

anyways, the tournament could be like the world championship in soccer. pre-qualify,´qual in groups, and then the finals...

a little bit more ream management (eg bots improve skills) would also be cool,.

I agree with Jafo, a team selection against certain teams would be great. I want to play agains Thunder crash? No prob, UT picks random 3 of them for my 3on3

EDIT:
customizable tournaments as new game mode in practice would also be cool

I like that idea too, teams vs teams & customizable ladders/tournies within the game.

What would be extra superb would be the ability to make yourself a server and have a mate join in as the 'captain' of the other team. Sort of.. half multiplayer, half single player. Could be a whole new market for Bot-gamers, and people that don't like pubs/clanning.

LEVEL UP! I think that that's a good idea. hehe I just thought of how in Diablo II they have a character ladder which is based on level. A similar ladder could be incorporated based on a player's average net-play statistics, accuracy, aggressiveness, tactics, jumpiness etc. where players would have the stats like the stats displayed in SP mode. And I don't mean the net-ladder that pre-exists for those who will argue that this feature exists. I mean that when your playing on the internet and press F1 it will show not only your score, but a number from 0-100 which will display your AVERAGE STATISTICS and on the top, besides team score there will be a TEAM RATING, based on the average of the stats of the players on the team. I believe that this will help eliminate balance issues, things like "Red Team Always Wins" will not be true anymore because players could be spread accordingly at the beginning of every match based on their performance the previous round, this will all be done automatically by the server.

You can't change the parameters of the pawn the player plays with during the net experience. THat just ****s everything up, badly.

Offline... maybe, but it's a bad rut to be in if they want to go online and will have to have different settings then, standard.

If you want stat related gaming, you need RPGs.

i like the season idea. Like NHL series. If you loose a match you dont have to play it again and again to continue.
