I'd really like to hear the backstory of this, and why was this guy allowed to speak. Great speech indeed  .

Yikes, scary! Making jokes of about the President when he's 15 feet to your right? Tough crowd!

I thin kI can safely say none of us would have watched that garbage if Stephen Colbert wasn't in it. They're "political magnets" for a demographic who for generations have largely ignored these events (apparently watching them makes us more politically aware).

The powers that be don't get the fact that most of us get our news from other sources, desceminate it amongst our friends and colleagues, debate it and come up with our own opinions rather than listen to CNN/FOX/Comedy Central exclusively for our news. Stephen Colbert and Jon Stewart understand this fact which is WHY their shows are so succesful. They're not telling us to laugh or to think. They're joking and thinking along with us.

Well that's interesting and all, but i don't think it'll help me understand what was the purpose of this event and what were the officials thinking letting Colbert deliver a speech there. :D (or maybe you just hit the "quote" button by accident ?)

More like, five feet to his right.

Brilliant speech. Thanks Geo, can't believe I missed it live.

What better way for Bush to pretend he's cool by allowing himself to be insulted by a comedian of sufficient status ?

I guess it's only strange in the USA, because around here it happens at least once a year.

The transcript was amazing. I really really wish I had kept watching it and seen it live.

So the White House has personnel changes. Then you write, "Oh, they're just rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic." First of all, that is a terrible metaphor. This administration is not sinking. This administration is soaring. If anything, they are rearranging the deck chairs on the Hindenburg!

Oh, mercy.
