Might as well get all this anitgovernment stuff out of me while I can. /~unreal/ubb/html/smile.gif Driving home from school a few minutes ago, listening to an FM talk radio show (97.1 Daminski and Doyle 3pm-7pm, they're funny guys). They had on a Michigan senator who wanted to ban the use of cell phones when driving. In and of itself, that was ridiculous enough to p1ss me off, but then he said...this is an exact phrase he used.....I kid you not, this is the EXACT phrase the senator, an official in our government, used, "...helping the people because they can not help themselves."................I felt like tearing my radio right out of the dash. If that comment didnt just infuriate you then you have no self-respect and deserved to be led wherever the hell they take you. Ridiculous.

See thats the problem, see how I said "they"? The government has overstepped their damn boundries so much that people refer to it as "they" as though it is some untouchable authority which we have no control over (which seemingly has become more and more true) We have no "real" people in our government. Just a bunch of rich old white men, who think that they know better than us common folk. They forget that they are there to serve and represent us! But instead they try to force upon us what they think we should believe!
They are born into wealth, they associate with the wealthy, they graduate law school, they go into political office, and we're stupid enough to vote for them. Democrats, republicans, republicans, democrats...whats the freaking difference? They all have their own personal agendas, they all have no clue what the true role of government should be, and they all think you're stupid. This stupid two party system is killing us, a choice between the lesser of two evils. And the media thinks this is all a damn game! Watch f*cking SUnday morning political talk shows..."Smith went to Boston before he went to Cleveland that will really hurt him in the polls","Johnson cancelled his speech in front of the NAACP, that will hurt his black vote","Jones ad campaign really helps him in the polls." WTF happened to the issues! This isnt a goddamn game, and if people really use media polls, TV commercials, and the geopgraphical route of their campaign trail to determine who they vote for then god help us all.

What can you do then? I ask myself this all the time. I say dont vote Republican or democrat period. Pick a third party (libertarian, whatever, it doesnt really matter, though its a good idea to educate yourself on some of the other parties) and vote for that third party. I guarangoddamntee that they wont win, but you've done your job and made a difference. My point is that the TV networks and most media in general dont give other party's their fair air time (why? $, thats your answer). Stir some stuff up, vote for a "real" person.

Sh1t p1sses me off so damn much that I damn near want to dedicate my life to getting into goverment and ousting these useless pussbags. But I'd rather enjoy my short, meaningless 80 years on this planet, seeing as I couldnt make a difference anyway.

L_S, I'm not much into politics... as I have my hands full with "religion" as you guys see it.

However, as for cell phones, I think they should be banned while driving. Driving is a potentially deadly activity, normally deadly to somebody else - people walking, driving a motorcycle, trying to get their kids to school - when some moron on a cell phone slides over too far because the cell phone is more interesting than watch where they are going.

As a single citizen it is very hard for me to do anything about it. I could ask the person to pull over if they want to talk instead of endangering me, and they would say to "F**k off!" So unfortunately Goverment has to step in and protect the majority of peple from the few who think they have the right to do anything they want - whether it endangers others or not.

IMHO...

Okay then we'll have to ban the following from cars too: changing CD's, lighting cigarettes, holding conversations with passengers, unruly children, etc.

On the show they listed studies which prove some of those things I just mentioned are more distracting than cell phones. They have careless driving laws, so if someone is driving dangerously they can pull them over, why do we need a cell phone specific law? Punish everybody because of a few idiots? Here's a better idea: how about some decent driver's ed classes instead. No way! we have to legislate, legislate, legislate because the people can't help themselves.

I know you know. Did you know that I knew you knew?

I was just saying it again, because I feel VERY strongly about it.

Here'sa another one, but I can't remeber who said it.

"Freedom is never lost all at once, but rather in small increments."

Every day in this country a new law is passed that limits you personal freedom, all in the name of security. (Protecting stupid people)

PS, Had actually checked my stats, you would not have said that. /~unreal/ubb/html/smile.gif

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Somebody who understands! Like I said before, you comprimise one right, you're that much closer to comprimising the next. It might not seem like much now, but like Lizard said, "Freedom is never lost all at once, but rather in small increments."

I agree LS..but this has been going on forever. The govt is beyond the norms an standards it set for everybody else. And there is a multitude of unfair practices going on.
One that burns my a$$ is this immunity given to foreign natls..they come here and murder somebody then get off with diplomatic immunity..even though its clear they are guilty...now THATS govt at its finest.

And then theres the affirmitive action program..whereby failure and lack of sucess are rewarded over those more qualified. Unbelieveable!...Like this is somehow helping our nation?

And did you know that a mature tree in this country is safer than an unborn child? It is....and is that insane or what?

We'll spend millions of dollars trying to save the doublebreasted 4finger 3 winged motherfuk tree duck...while we have people sleeping in garbage dumps and underneath overpasses with no job and even worse..no hope.

And we give away billions of $ and even military aid to countries that resent us in the 1st place

We didnt learn anything from Nam as was evident in Desert Storm...the enemy is still going strong and rebuilding..we havent seen the last of Iraq yet..watch and see. Could we have won both wars easliy and quickly..yes...(hell in Iraq we killed more of our guys than they did..sheeeez) Why didnt we? Politics and govt..we have a bunch of wusses that have no clue how to be decisive.

And I could go on an on...as you get older you start to focus in on this insanity more an more

Heeh hehe.... go OFUY!

The problem is that people will not regulate themselves! Due to lack of respect of others as pointed out before.

If it wasn't for the fact that my views on politics would use a books worth of type, I'd add to L_S's little schpeal, but since I'm not in the mood, I'll just agree.
Oh, and I use my cell phone in my car all the time, and I love it, and I'll never stop. I do have a manual trany tho, and so I use a Jabra® headset. Those things are sweeeet. Completely hands free too.

Well over here, driving while using a mobile phone is illegal. You have to use a hands-free kit or the cops will pull you over. A Good Idea if you ask me.

I think that the hands-free kits should be the only way you can talk on the cell in the car - if your the driver. Passengers, should have no requirements.

Course I still haven't gotten a hands-free yet as I'm likely to be getting a new cell phone in a month or so.

I belch in your general direction.

Thought I'd have my say. Interested know where over here is Zaccix?

I agree with LS that politicians are often out of touch. but i still think that there are a lot of good ppl in a) your own political system (not everyone does it for the power) and b) my own political system.

How much do politicians get paid in the US? An MP (member of parliament) here gets £40,000 a year - about $60,000. Not a massive amount compared to what they could be earning in other professions.

As far as mobile phones go, at present you can use them in the UK whilst driving, but there is increasing pressure to ban them. But in theory the police could stop you for dangerous driving. There's been (I think) 10 deaths (last year) caused by drivers using a mobile (compared to, for example, 420 deaths (last year) caused by accidental overdose on paracetemol!.

The case for banning them: Think of it this way, by exercising your freedom to use your mobile whilst driving, you are decreasing the right of someone else to live. Think of it as a sliding scale. No matter how you put it, anything that distracts you from driving, increases the risk of an accident. Therefore any measures to reduce that risk are contributing to the overall freedom of everyone. Using a mobile means that you have to take one hand off the wheel (not the way you are taught to drive) and more often than not, have to take your eyes off the road (not dissimilar to changing a CD or radio station). True freedom is freedom for everyone, not just a select group of individuals.

My own opinion is that a compromise is best. Technology has the answers. Voice activated mobiles, which are 100% handsfree (when combined with a stand thing and a headset, or speakerphone) are becoming more common - they might well be even more common in the US. Once you get to that stage, you can argue taht there is no difference between using that and talking to a passenger or even thinking out loud.

i think that would make a useful compromise.

That's what I meant by it being illegal. Shame there isn't a an actual law for it though.
