My cable speeds

I use AT&T @Home service, and on a good server I can get download speeds of up to 200 kilobytes (1600 kilobits) per second. On high-bandwidth servers (like @Home's own site) I see up to 300 KB/sec.

On relatively nearby UT servers I can get pings as low as 80 or so, though usually I see ~110. Q3 servers on the other hand usually give me ~50.

I get 256Kb/s down, and 112Kb/s up. I average about 75Kbps when downloading (although it HAS gotten as high as 150Kbps a couple times). I definately think it was worth it. I actually got back into Counter-Strike (sad, but true) once I realized that it was PLAYABLE now.

Well, cable is NOT that great. I got cox, and well, it sucks. The only sub-100 ping i ever get is on Creative Infiltration, and thats on a good day. During peak hours(basically afternoon-night) the pings go up as my cable node gets crowded. See, cable is shared. Not secure, so dont try buying with it on the net, and, if other people are on it then it will slow you down.

DSL is many times better.

For instance, my cable is advertised as 192k/1.544mb. Of course, it is impossible to absorb maximum bandwitdth, so its more like 96k/500kish. Thats without sharing. If you get a good provider, it kicks, but without it it sucks.

Well, it depends on what the local Cable provider does.

For example, there's never more than four people on any one section here, because that's the way Rogers regulated it, to keep speeds high. So its really very easy. not that it doesn't go slow sometimes, but that's just over-all net congestion... I've done tracerts and its wonderfully fast until it leaves the internal network at the border routers.
