...if you know where to look.

So essentially, I played through this. Just one level for now and playtime is 10-20 minutes. Short pleasure, a mere 700+ MB download... but boy, the nostalgia.

Igarashi and his merry band of geniuses are definitely onto something here. Basically, if you love the classic (non-Lords-of-Shadow) Castlevania series, you MUST get this game, no questions asked. It's precisely what you're looking for.

The demo has the protagonist Miriam traverse a pretty worn-down ship similar to the one Cornell visited in Legacy of Darkness and which was his arena in Judgment. The ship, being 3D and quite vivid an environment, with water leaking in, stuff falling apart as you go through and of course infested to brim with monsters, is traversed on a 2D plane similar to the Dracula X Chronicles perspective. The immortal light-source-serving-as-energy-refill paradigm happens here too, as breaking the lanterns leaves behind mana orbs akin to Castlevania's hearts. There's a metroidvaniaesque minimap, metroidvaniaesque gameplay, basically EVERYTHING you'd expect from what was seen on the project's kickstarter page.

Did I mention that Miriam is strikingly similar to Shanoa and she can absorb enemies' souls like Soma? Pure gold.

March 2017. This will be a long wait. But it's worth it. For heavens' sake, it's worth it.
