Anybody here ever try Avast antivirus? I had to reformat a couple weeks ago and my Norton said I had installed it too many times so I only had a couple weeks to use it. I bought Norton 2006 and was looking for reviews afterwards (before I opened the box) and somebody posted something about FREE avast.

I checked into it and you get free antivirus protection for a home user. I guess I’m going to take my Norton back to the store and get my money back.

Ive used it for about a year (Norton just sits there eating up cpu & memory so I didn't even wait for my year to expire)

So far Ive not had anything take over which wasnt the case 2-3 times with Norton.
They do a good job keeping the virus database up to date and the updates are very small compaired to anything else Ive used.
Also the bootscan actually works, When running Norton it still woulnt quarantine/delete stuff for me when doing a boot scan.

I'd say its definatly worth a shot if your wanting to get rid of Norton, (heck its free for the non commercial version)

If you do get it uninstall Norton (found out the hard way they do no like each other)

I read about removing Norton before installing avast, so I didn’t want to take a chance on some Norton files staying behind so I went through the removal procedure at norton’s site. I knew that wouldn’t get it all, so I used their tools to remove even more stuff, but I knew that wouldn’t get rid of it all and it didn’t. I still had a Symantec folder left behind and I couldn’t delete it because a process was using it. I stopped the process and it still couldn’t remove. I rebooted and could finally get rid of the Symantec folder. However, I bet if I search through the registry, there are lots of Norton files still hanging around.

Anyway, I didn’t have any problems installing avast. I did the thorough scan for the first time, knowing it would take forever, and it did: over 4 hours. It found nothing. I’ll use the standard scan after this unless I think I have a real problem. I picked the option to generate the backup database when the PC was idle in case I need to fall back to a clean system.

I’m taking my Norton back to walmart today. I haven’t opened the box (plastic intact) and I have the receipt. I have better things I can spend my money on.
