Since this IS the OT forum, and I never started this thread....

can you Canadians tell me about Canada?

I am an Aussie working in Singapore, and was considering when I want to go back to Australia.

However, I was talking to someone and he mentioned he had friends in Canada, and they loved it there.

So perhaps I can have someone who loves Canada to answer me these things:
1) What's the income tax rate like, and is there any GST?
2) What's the crime rate like?
3) are people friendly?
4) how does it compare with Australia in terms of living there.
5) What are some of the things you hate about Canada?
6) What are some of the things you LOVE about Canada?

Thanks to any Canadians who can answer. And please - serious answers, not something like "The tax rate is too high" - may I please have some specific answers.

thanks!!

1) What's the income tax rate like, and is there any GST?

Income tax ranges anywhere from nothing (bum) to 51% (rich)... though that may soon change with a flat rate of 17% of all income for all people.

Hahahaha, GST... Christ all mighty we've been trying to get rid of that forever but our PM's to damn lazy.

2) What's the crime rate like?

Really low. There's obviously crime, but its low

3) are people friendly?

Abnormally so.

4) how does it compare with Australia in terms of living there.

Well, considering the UN has named us "the best country to live in, period" for the umpteenth year in a row, I'd say its a pretty good life. Low cost of living, decent jobs, a minimum wage you can actually live on

5) What are some of the things you hate about Canada?

Seperatists. Rip my country apart my fucking ass.

6) What are some of the things you LOVE about Canada?

Beer
Hockey
Cigarettes taste good
The women
The clean air
The vast outdoors
The diversity
Cheap hardware
Great hunting
Great skiing
Great snowboarding
Great rockclimbing
Overly friendly people
We seem to like everybody really, and we never claim to be the best country in the world, although every other country in the world keeps telling us we are. I guess we're modest.
Nobody ever tries to blow us up.
We don't start wars.
We just keep the peace when they're done.
Hell, we invented peacekeepers.
And the telephone.
And the first trans-atlantic radio broadcast.
And the first commercial radio station.
And maple syrup. And smuggling cigarettes.
And selling liquor to 18 year olds from a convenience store. Legally.

Wheeeee I love my country.

Yes, that's right Alexander Graham Bell DID invent the telephone..

thanks Bad.Mojo for replying. Hey you Canadians! Can I hear a second opinion?

1) how much is the GST?
2) is there any racism in Canada, if so, against whom in general?
3) how much is housing? just a rough figure..?

thanks a million!!!!!!!!

Alexander Graham Bell did invent the telephone. He was a citizen of Canada, a migrant from Britain. He designed the telegraph in Canada, and aided the first aeronautical experiments in Canada.

James Naismith (inventor of basketball) was from Almonte, Ontario.

And there's no question where hockey came from.

Yeesh, we give you guys so much, and you never even say thank you.

As far as the other questions go, the GST is 7%.

Racism abounds like it does in the states, and is probably equally proportional to the same amount of the population as it is down south, though people seem to be much quieter about it here. You have the typical racist groups like the Ku Klux Klan, neo-nazi groups, you have anti-white groups (typically black or lebanese, hardly ever indian, chinese, japanese, etc.) and the most predominant racism is anti-immigrant. Whenever we get a new flood of people that we're evacuating from their war-torn country that come to our cities and start criminalizing crap (and yes, they do, and yes, it gets on my nerves) you can bet they'll be a targetted group.

As far as housing, I have no idea because Canada's huge, second in size only to Russia, but with only 30 million people, I can't imagine you running out of space for houses. You can always see new houses being built, all very nice, for any price range. Housing in Canada, we have alot of.

Best Country

For the past couple of years, Canada has been voted the best country in the world to live in. I live in it, and I have traveled a bit. No where is quite as good all around. My only peeve is the f****** winter weather. I hope you come and visit us, eh. /infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Eh, the winter isn't that bad, i don't find. I honestly like the winter more than the summer. I'm one of those freaks that wears a t-shirt in the winter and hide s out in an air conditioned house all summer long... meh..
