A new year, and a new dumbass question:)

  • Two Factor Authentication is now available on BeyondUnreal Forums. To configure it, visit your Profile and look for the "Two Step Verification" option on the left side. We can send codes via email (may be slower) or you can set up any TOTP Authenticator app on your phone (Authy, Google Authenticator, etc) to deliver codes. It is highly recommended that you configure this to keep your account safe.

When UT loads a specific level, does it only load the texture pack for that particualr level into RAM, or are all textures kind of loaded "just in case"? What I'm really trying to find out is this: when making a map, is it advisable to limit yourself to textures from one pack only, to cut down on memory use? or is it ok to mix textures from different packs? or is it a good idea to create a new pack with just those textures in it that are actually used in the level?

When UT loads a level it loads all the texures used in that level and all the items. It usually does this during the precache phase (which is why it's there).

For instance try adding in a weapon that isn't part of your level by cheating in game and watch the load up time for it. Usually a few seconds right? Now try to add in an item that's part of your level. It's instantly there.

So UT will only load up what's needed for that level.

Great! Thanks (again) Wanderer. Didn't know about that precaching stuff. So basically it doesn#t matter if I use textures from 20 different packs, as long as they're provided with the regular UT.
