Jailbreak Wants You!

Well as you know the forum reset hurt. It hurt us a lot, in particular, with a lot of important UT3 discussion vaporized. But the real problem is since this, people involved in this have not given a sign of their presence or activity in a while. Wormbo has also been involved in the project for a long time and he's still around here somewhere. :D

So, Jailbreak ineeds a little help:eek: But all is not lost! As always we can count on longtime jailbreak friend UnrealGrrl to do the voices, and Tarq on PR and probably other things. And I'm here. I've been with jailbreak since the UT99 days, doing mostly bugtesting, spurting ideas, and I made a few maps. But my scripting/modelling/artwork skills are nil. So I make a call for help. These are jsut examples, but if you've been wanting to offer something to the wonderful world of jailbreak, we can use you to make it happen! As always a link on the jailbreak section of the forums has encouraged y'all to inquire if you want to participate in jailbreak development. I'm asking you to post here if you think you have something to offer. There's no specific criteria I can think of, other than some kind of useful ability and a love for jailbreak. So, anyone game?

** I'd like to clarify- We're working on this, but many of us lead pretty busy lives so it's pretty slow going. In particular, I think some good mapping talent and another person keen on unrealscript would help speed the project along. If you want, you could send a PM to Wormbo or Tarquin if you'd like to latch on and make the next jailbreak even better!

Do we have a purpose for the latter?
I'm sure you or someone will code one in. It was discussed extensively in 2k4 and now it should finally make it in. ;)

Rev: we'll need a necris version of the switch too. ;)

Never thought of that, given the style of the game that might not be a bad idea.

Maybe I can help with mapping?

So far I only know of one map project, so the more the merrier. :)

I'll be working on some map layouts next summer. Can't start to work on anything UT-related right now (other than discussing and ocassional maptesting) because of massive university homework.

That's a good idea.
/thinks about how a necris llama would look like... :D

We've got a few nice things going on in the map department, our greatest need right now is in the scripting area- Our past contributors here are pretty busy right now, so it will be quite some time before this gets out the door without some extra hands. We're still here, but it's pretty slow going. If you're a fan of jailbreak, you've got a chance to stick your name in it. Just let me, or tarquin, or wormbo know if you want to help and need access to the dev forums. As it says in the index, deleopment is open to anyone who wants to join in on the fun.

I haven't got UT3. I'm running Windows 2000, no desire to upgrade to XP, and my current PC is powerful enough for what I do day to day but probably not for the game.
If I get enough cash in the future to blow on an upgrade, then I'll get it -- but no idea when that might happen. If ever.

I'm happy to keep on doing PR, at least until I start being hampered by not actually having seen what I'm talking about
If anyone has a burning desire to take over or help, let me know :)

You really don't need a monster rig to run the game. If you dont, it wont look any better than 2k4. I built my system about 9 months before and it runs the game perfectly on the default settings, really nicely on lower settings, and acceptable at the higher settings.
A dual core CPU, any dual core, and you can run this game. Single core, it has to be the fastest one you can get. But any dual core out there, made a year ago or even earlier, can run the game great.

But why are u using windows 2000? lol... I can understand not getting vista but there's nothing wrong with XP. go get a torrent if you must ;)

Hehe that's exactly what you said when ut2k4 came out. Took you 2 years to get around to buying that I seem to remember ;)

As for still being on Win2000? I guess it goes with your betamax video recorder.

"It does what I want, no need to upgrade" :p

And XP -- too much hassle for not enough gain.

Yeah, after all, who wants modern software?

Well maybe not that far behind :D

A lower-to-mid end dual core is cheap these days. and *any* dual core is a huge upgrade over even a higher clock speed single-core.

Very true.
I'm still on a single core though and it runs UT3 way better than I expected.
I'd love a dual/quad core but can't really justify and upgrade atm :/

I bet those guys with 8-core Mac Pros can't wait for the game to come out for Mac (And shouldnt it be an easy transition from Mac to the Linux client? mac os X is unix based right?)

Anyway, on topic. As far as PR goes, i'd offer an invitation on a more well traveled part of the forums. I'm reaching out to the regulars here, but tarq and friends are probably better known in the community. We really need some scripting talent for this to go anywhere. (We've already got at least one map in the works, so we need the actors to go into the map to make it play jailbreak >.>)

When we ever start working on it...

I think Wormbo and I are pretty much on the same line when it comes to how we think about UT3. This thread should explain it a bit.

On a related note: I've been playing CoD4 a lot, which runs amazingly smooth after some graphical tweaking in the game (note: NOT the inis).

If you two don't like the game that's fine, but that doesn't make me want to get jailbreak out any less, as I'm happy and enjoying it. The next patch addresses a substantial number of problems, as well.

We had a news update at the beginning of december that "jailbreak is in development." But yet, very little has been done. Though my own ability to do anything outside of making a map is very limited, I very much want to see this through.

My only complaint about the game relates to what you just said- Their treatment of their own customers on their own forum. Any kind of criticism is just dismissed as "some random troll." The maturity level of the mods is very lacking, if those people worked for me they'd be gone in a second.

We really need at least one good coder, who has worked on a significant released mod, to help plan the framework before it even starts.

Anyway as for me, I'll just join in as usual, my 2c here and there but not committing to anything. Real Life and all that. I've got some CTFs planned on the horizon so if they happen they can be JB'ified, but that's about it.

I'm willing to oversee/do/work on any of my main projects turning into JB maps when they're finished for their 'original' format (CTF, duh). Won't be for a while before the first one's ready for such ventures though.
