3D COMMANDER KEEN 4

we're searching for talented unreal scripter. we're planning to do a 3d version of old dos game commander keen 4.
i'm the sound/texture editor, DSL will create models & maps, so we're searching for uscript coder and perheaps a talented mapper. the game is planned as a mod for unreal tournament (NOT 2003/04)

as for legal rights, theres nothing to say... we don't wanna sell this game, it will be another keen fangame (there are few dosens of keen fangames out there). it will be a recreation of a keen 4, but it will not contain any art/sounds/music from original keen 4. only problem could be that it will look better than most of keen fangames.

as for chosing UT engine, we want our mod to be also played on some slover CPUs. anyway, even my pc is too slow to run UT2003/04

Please don't make a 3D keen, not everything works in full 3D. If you are going to make it, please make it a side scrolling plantformer (like Duke Nukem Manhatten Project).

As for the right, you can simply email iD or Joe Siegler at 3DRealms (I don't know who actually owns the rights to Keen 4)

Thats an invalid argument. The PC is designed to be upgraded. Some PCs may not run it right now, but they will at some point. Anyway, people who can't play UT2k4 but can play UT99 are a minority Most machines can run it. The ones that cant are people who are too lazy/cheap to upgrade (I don't want to hear excuses, you can save up for a UT2k4 compatable PC, they aren't that expensive) While its usually considered wrong to exclude them, in the PC world, its pointless to wait for them. If we waited for every slow PC, you would be writing it in assembler on the Wolfenstein 3d engine. :rolleyes:

And you call yourself a mod leader. :rolleyes: You can't make decisions like that. While it IS the job to lead your team, you can't just say "My system doesn't support this guys, sorry, were using a game practically noone plays anymore". You don't see me chopping out stuff from my mod simply because I have dialup. Yeah, it sucks downloading 100+mb of stuff over a 26.4 connection, but thats not a valid reason to make the mod smaller. Upgrade your PC. Seriously.

I have to agree, UnrealEngine3 is allegedly coming out in 2006, and by the time you're done it'll probrably be 2005, which is only a year away from UnrealEngine3, and once that happens even UT2003/2004 players will likely start to migrate.

However, the requirements for UT2003/2004 really aren't all that high. 733MHz CPU, 128 megs of RAM, and a DirectX 6 compatible video card.. Of course, that's MINIMUM, but I don't think commander keen is exactly going to tax the system, and that's a 300 dollar system. (Canadian dollars too, and it's even including tax!) That's like, a weeks work at McDonalds.

hey, here are some news:

-we'll be using ut04 engine
-all models will be done in 1-2 months
-i created ~ 200 textures, but plan to do 1000 of them and then start to do music

after i create all the textures, we whould really need a good mapper. the game will have around 10 maps

I'm not sure that schedule is realistic.

First off, modeling that many things in 1-2 months is crazy unless you have a fleet of modelers, or are paying 2 or 3 of them. Second, 1000 textures? Riiight... Assuming you did do 1000 textures, thats going to be one hell of a large mod to download.

that keen model was made in 2-3 days and also there are few other models already made. keen model will be redone...

all of my textures don't need to be used... they'll be available for mappers only and later all unused stuff will be removed! i don't know how much of them will be actualy used because they all got that "cartoonish feeling"

we're planning to do playable version of 3d keen until the end of summer (and thats 3 moths exactly)

You just don't listen do you? You didn't answer any complaints about the porting issues (will it play just as good or be crap in 3D), you CAN'T pull this kind of mod off in 3 months, and even if you can get all the models you need done in a month, they still need to be skinned, animated, and imported. Also, you seemed to disreguard the overarching question here, posted by Solid Snake:

Sorry, wrong answer. By making this mod, you're getting business (if it's good) for Atari and Epic, not to mention using the name Commander Keen and it's associated IP. You think I'm joking, just go talk to the guys working on the Troopers Mod, they went through 2 years of hell dealing with Lucas Arts getting permission to release the mod.

As for actually getting a team, you haven't given a reason for us coders to join you. To get a team you have to prove to people that working on this mod is a worthwhile use of their time. If you want a good mod, you have to listen to the community first, sell yourself to the available modders, then buckle down and get to work.

So ya, you have to make people want to work on your mod. It's the only way you'll get a team together.
