TV Crocodile Hunter sparks outrage
5.10PM, 2 Jan 2004

Steve Irwin - famous for his Crocodile Hunter TV series on ITV1 - has been criticised for holding his baby son a metre from the mouth of a crocodile at a Queensland zoo.

Child advocates branded Steve reckless for holding one-month-old Bob while feeding a giant crocodile a dead chicken.

His wife, Terri, looked on as Steve walked Bob to the crocodile pool at his Sunshine Coast wildlife park.

Steve - who was recently named Queenslander of the year - has defended the stunt, saying the baby was never in danger. But now he faces a possible police investigation.

The Australian Family Association spokesman, Bill Muehlenberg said his conduct was tantamount to child abuse.

Queensland Police have confirmed that they received complaints from the public about the incident.

In an interview with an Australian newspaper, Steve defended his behaviour, saying: "This kid has to grow up to be croc savvy.

"I guess what I am doing is teaching him to be completely familiar with crocodiles. There's no way known I would ever endanger my child."

honestly, i really dont see anything wrong with it. call me crazy, but i watch croc. hunter all the time and i think that he could easily be trusted with a child in a situation like that. all he was doing was feeding the croc, and he does that numerous times a day i am sure. in addition to having wrestled and captured many other crocs and dangerous animals, and he is still alive and in good health. granted, i think that it was a risk that didnt need to be taken, but if he feels like he should raise his child around crocodiles then that is his and his wifes business. as long as the child wasnt injured, i dont know what is wrong with what he did.

Now if he was teaching the child to wrestle the crocs, then there'd be reason to worry.

Honestly. If either him or his wife or probably ANYONE there had ANY reason to believe the kid wouldn't be perfectly safe they would have NOT let him take the kid out there like that.

But why take any chances? Anything can go wrong. There is always some rare technicality that might pop up. Roy of Siegfried and Roy has been messing around with Tigers forever, and he got mauled just recently. A newborn child 3 feet away from a croc is never a good idea, no matter how professional you are.

I, personally think he is well within his rights to do that if he wants.. infront of the media.. maybe a little stupid, but if you want to get your kid in to <x> early in life, what do you do? you introduce it to <x> nice and early on.

Okay, so this is a crocodile.. so what? Steve's spent his whole life around these things, and he wants to introduce his kid to it? Not a bad way of doing it I'd say, not as if the kid came to any harm.

I think it's a stupid idea to hold a baby and feed a wild animal of any kind. I mean come on, they are large, unpredictable animals. The fact that nothing happened doesn't take away the point that at any time (and I'm sure he plans or did plan to do this again) the animal could have put the child in danger. I would think that since he's been in dangerous situations himself with crocodiles that he would appreciate how having to protect his infant son as well as himself from an attack would lead to disaster. Having someone else hold him a bit further away while he feeds the animal seems a better way for the kid to get used to them and also to realize that they are not pets. I think the example of Siegfried and Roy was a good one, they have had those tigers around for years and still one of them was seriously injured on stage. Wild animals are always unpredictable. I don’t know if this means he should be prosecuted for child abuse, but I do know it seems like a hell of an unnecessary risk to his child.

At first I was thinking, "hey, leave the guy alone" too.

When I thought about it a bit more I realized that it's not really within his rights to endanger his helpless child. Despite his extended experience with the animals, they are still unpredictable, extremely fast, and enormously powerful.

Why take the chance?
