At last, PS3 Unreal Tournament 3 owners are able to enjoy modifications that utilize custom sounds, thanks to the new ATRAC3 mod tools released free of charge by Epic Games.

Epic Games has great news for mod developers: Custom sounds can now be imported for Unreal Tournament 3 mods for PLAYSTATION®3 using Epic Games' ATRAC3 mod tools, which are free of charge and available now.

Previously, custom sounds for Unreal Tournament 3 mods have only been supported for PC. Thanks to cooperation with Sony, Epic Games is able to offer its QA-tested and approved PS3 sound conversion tools to mod authors.

What this means is that many of our latest and greatest mods, especially total conversions using entirely original assets, can now be ported over for the entire PS3 community to enjoy.

Want to see some of these amazing mods? Head over to www.makesomethingunreal.com to view the dozens of levels, characters, vehicles, weapons and total conversions that are in the running to receive lots of cash and even an Unreal® Engine 3 commercial license as part of the $1 Million Intel Make Something Unreal Contest.

If you are a mod author and want to take advantage of these tools, the instructions are really simple. First, you should have Unreal Tournament 3 for PC, patched to the latest version, installed on your local machine to get started. To access the sound conversion tools, simply click through the ATRAC end-user license agreement (EULA), install ATRAC on top of UT3's PS3ModTools v2.1 (which enable the cooking of PC mods for use on the PS3), and begin importing files.

You can read more about creating Unreal Tournament 3 mods for PS3 at the Unreal Developer Network.

Great news, I hope for more freedom and tools from Epic. SpeedTree tools would be awesome.

Interesting. We're willing in theory to try with Planetstorm but I can see it being a massive ballache. Anyone with a decent amount of experience cooking PS3 stuff want to talk to us about the sort of issues and limitations to look out for? I can see us having to ditch some keybinds for starters? If it's just about playable on full settings on a c2d e6400, 8800gt, will it be a slideshow on the console? Is a mod well over a gig in size installable? I can't see our artists being too happy about going through and halfsizing most of our textures...

Awesome! This is great for PS3 owners! Finally they can get awesome content like The Ball or Prometheus, effectively extending the life of the original game! Great job Epic :)

I'm guessing that if you have a mod using Titan content it can't be cross-ported.

Grr, just after I spent a while replacing all the custom sounds on my level for the PS3 version. Oh well, still greatful, yay! \o/
All we need now is titan content cooking
Hmm, yes it would be nice to get that fixed.
If it's just about playable on full settings on a c2d e6400, 8800gt, will it be a slideshow on the console?
In my experience with the CBPs, the PS3 generally handles anything that my PC can very well - I have intel quad Q6600, 4GB RAM, 8800GT. Though some levels did crash on load, which I concluded were memory problems, and had to cut some unnecessary background content out of them until they ran.

Yeah RAM your PC will pwn everything.

The 8800GT should be somewhat similar to what the PS3 has though... the PS3 GPU is just ~7900GT if I remember correctly
