Fans of Stargate have been on the edge of their seats ever since the UE3-powered Stargate Worlds MMORPG has been on shaky grounds, and now it seems that publisher Firesky has been pushed to the edge of the proverbial cliff. MGM has given the publisher a deadline of August 1st to come up with funding, or else MGM will pull the license, a claim which Firesky denies will happen.

Apparently, the publisher has until August 1 to raise the money else MGM will pull the license. To top things off, the whole ordeal relies on a group of doctors who are considering an $8 million investment.

Firesky's Director of New Business Development Shane Hensley said that the company has never considered scrapping the game, nor is there any danger of MGM stepping in and pulling the license. "MGM certainly isn't thrilled with our current situation, but neither do we have any specific indication they're pulling the license on any particular date," he said.

Funds for Stargate Worlds ran dry long ago, but rather than discontinue development, the company decided to hang on and continue working. Many key personnel moved on to other projects, while others chose to continue with the game and remain behind on pay. MMORPG.com said that currently there is only one member on the client team and one member on the server team still on the Stargate project.

Wait, I haven't read the article yet, but from the quote, there's a thing I don't quite get.

MGM says, Aug. 1st, but Firesky says that MGM hasn't given them a particular date? That doesn't make sense to me...

/me reads the article now.

Maaaaan - sounds sooooo familiar. On Stargate SG-1: Alliance we had the same problem with MGM not being too much supportive, on the contrary. The cancellation of Alliance was hugely influenced by their actions (but not only theirs). It sounds like MGM doesn't care at all about Stargate games, contrary to the fact that Stargate universe has all the elements needed to be turned into great game experience.
The question is how will this influence Cheyenne Mountain Entertainment if the plug is pulled and Firesky loses the licence? How hard will they try to get another publisher?
All this is a bit of a shocker! Or is it?

indeed ... a very plausible scenario.
Set an impossible target and the developers take the blame instead of MGM :(

There's only one problem ... what is in it for MGM ?
What can they gain by sabotaging development of their IP as a game ?

Corporations aren't monolithic (even if they're often monolithic evil, heh); maybe some exec was pressured into doing the project but either found it impossible or just didn't really want to make the effort. Not unimaginable that the exec sets things up so that the developers can take the blame and he/she can keep his/her hands clean of the failure.
