TG Daily posted an interview with Tim Sweeney made during GDC2008. Interview covers the future of the PC as a game platform, the role of the next-generation of game consoles, the next Unreal engine as well as the future of Epic.
TG Daily: But we mostly talk about conventional retail sales. Do you see an increasing divide between the Pc and consoles?

Sweeney: Retail stores like Best Buy are selling PC games and PCs with integrated graphics at the same time and they are not talking about the difference [to more capable gaming PCs]. Those machines are good for e-mail, web browsing, watching video. But as far as games go, those machines are just not adequate. It is no surprise that retail PC sales suffer from that. Online is different, because people who go and buy games online already have PCs that can play games. The biggest problem in this space right now is that you cannot go and design a game for a high end PC and downscale it to mainstream PCs. The performance difference between high-end and low-end PC is something like 100x.

I kinda like UT3.

It's true though, as long as there are cheap skates there will be cheap computers around.

And computer parts are so much more expensive than consoles which is...annoying.

Yeah I wish they would do something about it and stop telling interviewers for us to read! Makes you wonder who they are trying to convince hey :p

Theres a big core2duo ad on UT3 and well Gears is big with MS so you would think Sweeny would have intels and MS's ear.

Honestly all this type of talk does is hurt the industry more so you gotta wonder the motives when they have been running the same game for about 2 odd years now.

I wonder if people will actually read the articles and start directly trolling about Epic becoming a console-only shop.
Direct trolling people don't read articles. They only read the quoted text on the news and post here saying that epic betrayed them etc... :p

btw i totally dig his opinion on intel integrated chip at end of the second page, especially after i read about the new amd gaming chipset http://www.tgdaily.com/content/view/36299/135/ :)

That does sound pretty kewl about combining the onboard with the discreet graphics to gain extra performance. Those framerates in the games listed at the bottom could be lifted 10-20fps with the addition of discreet graphics ontop which should make gaming more cost effective on PC.

No, that ain't true. Just because people don't talk about an issue, doesn't mean it goes away.

Wtf, did you read my whole post. What Im saying is that the issue at hand, has been talked about in public by members of Epic for over 2 years and seemingly nothing has been done on their part to even attempt to resolve some of these issues.

Now sure intel and MS dont have to listen to Epic, but it would be nice to know if Sweeny and Rein have atleast talked directly to them with their complaints. I just think it would have more weight that way than sending it out over the net, which generates a negative view on PC as a gaming platform.

The issue is certainly there but talk never solved anything did it? We need alittle action!

As much as I will always use my PC for gaming I have to grudgingly agree with Mr Sweeny here. Why would a developer waist huge amounts of time and money on trying to scale their game for PC's when they have standard console hardware to work with. I'll use UT3 as an example:
Epic did a fantastic job scaling the engine IMO. I was surprised at how well it worked on lower end systems. But, to see it in all it's glory you have to have a wicked rig. Not so with the PS3 version. Any shmow with a PS3 can have the same performance right off the bat.
But at the end of the day, consoles have definitely left PC games behind.
Unfortunately. :hmm:

Holy hell guys, chill out, quit flaming, seriously. Its making me wonder why I bother coming to this site when every third post is some comment about how much Epic sucks. Yeah they goofed up on UT3, we know, posting crap like that doesn't help anyone. So shut up about it all ready and quit acting like a 14 year old idiot.

It really bugs me that people find something to complain in a interview as this. He is right not everyone is paying lot's of money to upgrade for the nex gen games. The pre build pc's are far from acceptable.
I rlly didn't find any console fanboyism in his reply, even the quote : Pc's are good for anything, just not for games. Doesn't affect me. And there where more issues I totally agreed with.

Let's make a seperate forum for all the whiners, if ppl would whine less we'd be having a great community. I said once or twice that I think UT3 is incomplete and I stopped there, pointless to keep saying it. Although UT3 will never be my maingame ( <3 ut2004 ) I do think it's a great game and certainly not a console port.

Keep this forum clean, stop whining you got the epic boards for that or spam mark rein's email for what I care. Peace ^^

Twofaced ****s!

I usually dont post here, but this just bugs me.

You know what epics future is? To be run out of the market entirely by valve, and steam.

Valve IS PC gaming . that's it. Every title they release is a hit. they have their own distribution system, so they dont need to get tangled up in publishers like Epic does. (god only knows why epic dont just publish their own titles rather than using the morons at midway)

Further --> What has epic done lately for modders? The last thing i can think of was the MSU contest with UT2k4. that was cool. what's happening with the next one? Is it going to happen at all? I dont think so. UT3 was dropped on its ass like elephant man's bastard child. The modding support on epic's UDN for UT3 is equally awful.

Out of one corner of their mouth, they blabber about PC modding and supporting mod communities and then they go and make DUMBASS statements like this, which completely shatter everything they said before? You CANT HAVE MODDING without pcs, epic. so why the **** do you flaunt the mod capabalities of your games / engine and then go stab modders in the back by refusing them support and admitting that you are pulling away from the PC market.

On the back of the UT3 box, did it not ramble about modding capabilities? that's how you're marketing your own games! Figure it out!

if you dont want us to mod, which it's becoming plain that you dont. Then dont try to peddle us PC gamers your console rips with that ****ing pretense!

Christ!

Ahh taking things out of context - fun stuff.

All of the sudden you're reading "PCs are not good for gaming" instead of "60% of the sold PCs are not ready for games because they have an Intel graphics adapter"

Over there
I don't see how people can complain about this. Saying that Intel integrated graphics are bad and that a limited number of people have powerful PCs isn't advocating one platform or another. It's just an objective observation.

He isn't saying consoles are better for playing games. He's saying consoles have taken over the gaming market. And you can't dispute that.
