[DVD vs. CD for software] I don't understand.

  • Two Factor Authentication is now available on BeyondUnreal Forums. To configure it, visit your Profile and look for the "Two Step Verification" option on the left side. We can send codes via email (may be slower) or you can set up any TOTP Authenticator app on your phone (Authy, Google Authenticator, etc) to deliver codes. It is highly recommended that you configure this to keep your account safe.

I don't understand why people don't mind swapping CDs during install. Remember five years ago when one CD was enough? Now people apparently don't mind needed 3-5 discs to install games.

Did I miss the concept of being lazy, and DVDs?

I don't mind it that much when it's only around 2 cds, but when it gets up to 6 (a la 2k4) I start to get irate. I'm usually not that interested in sitting there waiting for the installer to prompt me to swap discs.

Because it just makes more sense to put lots of data onto one disk insted of many.

Not a soul alive would accept 2,000 floppies to install Windows xp. It would take too long, and there is a greater risk for one of the disks to go bad.

"MS is SH!T, I just spent 6 hours installing and i can't get past disk 1,296!"

People would just laugh at you for being an idiot to buy such a thing.

Clearly exagerated, but you get the point. Less is better.

Your mom could hold 40 gigs a disc.

People are lazy. That and I have nothing better to do than to swap disc all day.

Look at it this way....you can pop the DVD in, start the install, and then go take that MASSIVE SH*T you've had to take all day....when you're done, it's all installed, and you don't have to pop another 5 disks in...

couldn't have put it better myself

The standard PCs we get at work still come with CD drives. *edit* No, not true, the last twelve PCs we got seem to be our new standard and come with DVD drives.

Why don't I like having 5+ CDs? Because all games nowadays come in craptastic DVD packaging, with 2 or 3 of the CDs jammed onto a single spike, and any excess put in a white paper sachet that falls out at the slightest opportunity. At least, that was the case with Knights of the Old Republic.

If we still had proper packaging and proper CD cases it wouldn't matter, but as long as everything - manual, CDs, consumer survey and freepost envelope, etc. have to fit in a case built to take one disc and one case-sized booklet, then I'll just have one disc, thank you very much.

The only thing i would say about that is, If you have a computer that can play 2k4 and dont have a dvd drive. Your priorities were/are all jacked up.

I mind so much as to pick up the DVD version off of the store shelf instead of the CD version. I don't mind so much as to create a forum thread about it.

Having multiple CDs for a game doesn't bother me...

Except when you have to swap them regularily during in-game play. -_-;
(Mostly affects RPG games)
