Just looking to see what you all think of this...

For those of you who don't know what I'm talking about, look at this:

It's been a debated subject over the years, and with the ut3 hardware requirements in mind, what do you think?

Yeah I would say it is when used to extremes like that, not so much cheats its just not fair and not good sportsmanship to do so, if your rig cant handle UT3 then you are probably not as serious about your gaming as you think you are

I can see fine with the regular settings, I don't really see how that would improve your aim by much anyway.

Definitely not cheating. It's a simple ini edit that takes 2 seconds.

It's like playing with 1/1 with post-processing on muted vs 5/5 with post-processing on vivid, the former gives increased visibility at the expense of eye candy. If you want the bloom and vortex effects you're not going to be able to see as clearly.

Look Maw! Gouraud Shading!

I absolutely hate it and I absolutely hate players that do it. While it might be "legal" in that it can be adjusted, it's just horribly cheap. If your computer's too crap to run the game on lowest details, you should probably upgrade, rather than turn everything incredibly bland.

I have all details maxed out - yes, even motion blur on and Bloom set to Intense - and I have no problem killing people. There's no excuse.

I'm with ya pulse. I know of one player who does it, and then talks a WHOLE lotta smack on pubs. This individual has posted numerous screenshots on a forum of him "raping"... Just wanted some input on this before I completely label an individual. I have great hardware now, but not so long ago I struggled with 30-50 fps and never resorted to that...

If you have no problem killing people with your setup, why do you care?

Because the only reason you'd be doing it is to try to get an advantage, one that not many players know about or use.

If you can run the game with high details and get steady framerates, why would you set it to low? To make the enemy more visible? In UT3 you already practically have glowsticks.

Who's crying about it?

I just asked for people's opinions on it, and I don't see anyone making a huge fuss either way.

I couldn't have said it better myself.
I would add that if you need this kind of 'advantage' just to compete then you really aren't as good as you think you are ...

If UT3 already had "glowsticks," people wouldn't feel the need to increase visibility by editing LODbias. Have you ever played UT3 on the lowest settings? (without editing lodbias) It's MUCH easier to see that way than with everything maxxed out.

Seriously, it's not so much an advantage as you guys may think. It's provides little more visibility than 1/1 with pp turned to muted. It's not like I can just edit my lodbias and start raping people like xellos or rythem.

It's cheats.

Reason being that there is ZERO performance difference, so you can't bank on that excuse anymore. Going to low settings is fine; going beyond low settings is cheating. The entire reason it's being done is to make the enemies stand out from the background more.

F**king around with LOD crap is something pr0s do.

I would definitely agree that it's a little ridiculous, and I would never do it myself, but I'm not going to call someone a cheater if they beat me with a weird LODbias.

I would probably play worse with that anyway... too ugly, I'd get distracted :p

I dont think it's "Cheating" but I do think it's really silly that people would crank the graphics back to doom level after all these years just for a tiny advantage. It just shows how desperate some people are for an edge.

You know, since we are on the topic of pr0s, I havent seen alot of clips of this stuff but the ones I have seen are less than impressive. I guess I prefer the highlight reels better but anyways one thing that annoyed me with the q4 ones was the graphics were crap. As a spectator I like to see things at the best quality not some super tweaked pr0 out settings.

In a competition scenario I just think it would be better to try to aim at what the spectators want alittle more, not so much in the action thats up to the players and their styles but in the way the games look. You cant really say oh we dont have the systems to run it like that, it simply becomes some kind of trend and not all trends are good.

If it wasnt any advantage then why arnt we seeing much high quality graphics, not like the ones I seen of q4 comps?

I mean people can play how they want but they should consider whats fair for other people also when they play not just about their fragcounts. A prime eg from games in the past is turning off grass and shrub decorations which gives snipers a clear advantage. It ends up just being a trend where everyone starts turning everything off and we end up with a pile of mush like the screenshot in the OP, thats not the way its meant to be played! (pun intended)

Meh. I don't really care. Nobody is ever going to gain an advantage over me just because they made their graphics that hideous.
