Workaround for those having probs to connect to standard gametype servers!
<Sexmachine> Will - can you tell me more about the prob "can't connect to other gametype servers" after installing/playing Jailbreak 2004 and it's solution ???
<[-will-ut-]> k <Sexmachine> cool <Sexmachine> <[-will-ut-]> Foo/ConFucius -- to get around this bug, select a standard gametype in the server browser dropdown, exit, and restart the game <Sexmachine> is that what people have to do to bring it back to work ??? <[-will-ut-]> With any custom gametype, when you select it in the server browser dropdown <[-will-ut-]> Something is loaded from that mod by the game, and not unloaded when you go to join a server. So if the server your'e joining doesn't run that mod, it wont let you join (because of loaded clientside packages) <[-will-ut-]> This is something epic has ****ed up with. All gametypes do it, and it's a big ****ing oversight. <Sexmachine> k <[-will-ut-]> To sort it, select an OFFICIAL gametype in the dropdown <[-will-ut-]> And exit and restart the game <[-will-ut-]> You can now join other servers <Sexmachine> while keeping JB installed ? <[-will-ut-]> Yes <[-will-ut-]> Dont need to touch the install of any mod <Sexmachine> okies - thanks for telling <[-will-ut-]> No probs <Sexmachine> we need to add that to our page somehow <[-will-ut-]> Really need someone to bitch at epic about it <[-will-ut-]> It is quite a large ****up. Yea in the atari forums there's a bit more discussion on these things, I hope we can put out a fix for it relatively soon...

The -mod thing sucks. Jailbreak is a gametype, not a total conversion.

I'm a little confused (flame protection ><), so in the server browser, you select an official gametype, exit restart the game, and now you can play any gametype without getting "connection failed"? If I'm wrong could someone make step-by-step instructions for this disabled being?

For those who know what they are doing here is another way to avoid that specific problem (ripped from the ATARI forums):
Create a \UT2004\Jailbreak subdirectory, with Maps, Sounds, StaticMeshes, System and Textures subdirs. Move all JB .ut2's, .uax's, .usx's, .u's, and .utx's into the respective JB subdirs. Create a duplicate of UT2004.ini, call it JB.ini or something. In this one scroll down to the Paths= section and add paths to these new subdirs. Create a new UT2004 shortcut with -ini=JB.ini. When you startup regular UT Jailbreak will not be in it, so I doubt this error can happen for you, and play Jailbreak through the other shortcut. Haven't tried that myself yet but it sounds like it should work.

Ok here it is step-by-step:
1)Open up UT2004 if it's not open already. 2)From the main menu go to Instant Action. 3)In the Gametypes list select a standard one (like DM), but don't actually start a game or anything. 4)Go back to the main menu and quit UT2004. 5)Open up UT2004 again and you can now play any gametype. If you play an offline botmatch of Jailbreak though you'll have to remember to do this again before playing anything online. Basically, when you select a non-standard gametype it loads some stuff (I'm assuming related to the interface) to allow you to setup a game. The problem is this isn't unloaded like it should be when you do to play another kind of gametype. Selecting a standard gametype unloads the non-standard one's stuff and allows you to play any type of gametype again. In a way this is an oversight by Epic, it makes sense if you forget about online play entirely, since you will always select the gametype in the setup screen that you are about to play anyways. Obviously it's a rather large oversight though as online play is kind of a major component

Oh, I wasn't doing it in IA.

The things you do in IA affect the online play, if that's what you're confused about. If you select JB or any custom gametype in IA it screws up your online play, so you have to take those steps to restore it, even though they seem to be unrelated.

You have to add the paths to your UT2004.ini - example:
[Core.System] PurgeCacheDays=30 SavePath=../Save CachePath=../Cache CacheExt=.uxx CacheRecordPath=../System/*.ucl MusicPath=../Music SpeechPath=../Speech Paths=../System/*.u Paths=../Maps/*.ut2 Paths=../Textures/*.utx Paths=../Sounds/*.uax Paths=../Music/*.umx Paths=../StaticMeshes/*.usx Paths=../Animations/*.ukx Paths=../Saves/*.uvx Paths=../JB/System/*.u Paths=../JB/Maps/*.ut2 Paths=../JB/Textures/*.utx Paths=../JB/Sounds/*.uax Paths=../JB/Music/*.umx Paths=../JB/StaticMeshes/*.usx |

if i put the Jailbreak files in a separate dir a descrived above and add the paths and serverpackages to a separate ini file and call that, Jailbreak does not show up in the selectable gametypes in the server browser.
i can select it only when all the files are copied to the 'real' UT2004 dirs. |

Aha! I fixed it! All I had to do was delete every single thing that had to do with UT2K4! I think the problem had to do with a bot that I downloaded that had its own species...... Any way I haven't redownloaded Alien swarm or air bucs... just jail break, because thats all I play anyway....

![]() This procedure is outdated by now, by the way. Jailbreak 2004a (SP1) works around this problem, and the changelog for the latest UT2004 patch indicates that they hope they've fixed it in the game too. |
