Beat MGS2

Just beat it today. Didn't finish watching the credits so I don't know exactly what my time was, but I was at about 12 and a half hours when I saved after beating Metal Gear Ray. I thought the ending was fairly anticlimatic with the solidus battle and the storyline got extremely fucked up near the end with all the non-sensical twists and explanations. Overall, it's definitely a great game, but I liked the original MGS a lot better. MGS1 kept me playing straight through to the end in a day, whereas I never had an overwhelming desire to keep playing MGS2 after Raiden was introduced. MGS1 just had a more coherent plot, more awe-inspiring moments, and vastly superior boss fights, not to mention that you got to play as Snake. I would really like to see a remake of MGS1 done on the MGS2 engine and with the new gameplay enhancements. Maybe that's what the Xbox is going to get?

Dude, by skipping the credits, you missed out on a good minute and a half or more of story. Always watch the credits, because 9 times out of 10, there's more at the end.

It's better the second time through. The first time, you're so mind ****ed by it all that you have a hard time keeping up with what's going on.

I disagree.....NRA1

I'm on my third time through the game now and I love it!

I like the plot, I like the characters (even Raiden) and I thought the boss battles were pretty cool and I even like the fucked up ending!

If it weren't for GTA3, MGS2 would be my vote for game of the year.

Most games would be lucky to have just one "classic moment", a scene that makes such an impression that gamers talk about it for years. MGS2 has one of those nearly every hour.

Any bad things people have to say about it is either nitpicking or bitching, IMHO.

Come on this game is the reason you all bought a PS2!

Yeah, I figured there'd be something, I watched several minutes of credits (and saw one extra video I believe), but I'll guess I'll go back and watch the rest since I want to look at my stats anyways.

I did really enjoy the game and it is an incredible experience to be sure (I liked it enough that I'm planning to play through it again), but I wasn't captivated by it like I was by MGS1. In the original, there were a lot more boss battles (and they could actually be won, unlike two of the only six or so battles in MGS2), the movie-like presentation and abundance of quality voice acting was unprecedented when it was released, and it just had way more cool moments. The gameplay:non-interactive sequences ratio also seemed to be better in the first MGS.

The only really awe-inspiring moments in MGS2 (aside from what was in the demo) I can think of off the top of my head are sneaking past marines/taking pics of Metal Gear Rex/culminating disaster on the tanker, realization that you weren't Snake at the start of the big shell, introduction to vamp cutscene, harrier battle, scene with the president, dead body suprises you in water, sniping for Emma, rampage that you go on with Snake before Metal Gear Rex battle (my favorite part, I was yearning for a chance to go all-out guns blazing the whole game), and the scene on top of Arsenal Gear before the final boss. MGS1 simply has too many awe-inspiring moments to list (and here are just some that I can think of even though it's been almost two years since I last played it: Heart attack scene with the DARPA guy, Ocelot battle, everything with the ninja in it, everything associated with Foxdie, Psycho Mantis battle, Sniper Wolf battle, torture sequence, Vulcan Raven battle, helicopter battle, invisible soldiers in elevator with you, all the huge plot twists near the end, an awesome Metal Gear battle (as opposed to the unwinnable, frustrating one in MGS1), the hummer turret gunning at the end, and the Ocelot conversation with Solidus after the credits (though that might be unfair because MGS2 could have some kind of other shocker after the spoilers for all I know)). Again, MGS2 is a truly great game and it's unfair to expect tons of classic sequences and a great storyline when the core gameplay and graphics are essentially perfect, but I think it's not nearly as incredible as it could have been and that MGS1 was a better game.

maybe some spoilers here, but play through and watch the credits.. there's definetly going to be a MGS3.

I think over all, MGS2 is equall in quality to it's predicesors. I believe that the MGS had better character development though. Sniper wolf, raven, all of the bad guys, were just "cooler" then the new bunch. but that's just my opinion.

I think it's Raiden that i disliked the most. I can understand that because it's his first mission that he's not experienced, but damn.. it's no excuse to force the player to go through all the explanations, of how your gear works again.. that and damn.. the guy whines like he's got PMS.

It really is almost like the first and second chapter really are.. 2 different games. For example in the first part there's quite a variety of guards.. that guy with they flys, the couple of guys with the walkman's.. ect ect.

but in the second chapter its like .. really almost like a completely different guy worked on it. oh well.

but considering all the improvments (like auto skip button for the conversations, first person aiming, draging bodies ect) i'd say it makes up for it.

In regards to Raiden, I think Kojima explains it best...

When I was thinking about this game and the characters, I thought of the Sherlock Holmes series," he [Kojima] says. "Those books are written in the first person, but the narrator isn't Sherlock Holmes; it's Watson." Kojima says that this model inspired him to think of making the narrator in Metal Gear Solid 2 someone other than the main character. Before long, he had come up with a new character--a handsome and sensitive character who at first blush looks like the polar opposite of the gruff and antagonistic Solid Snake. "I really thought I would be able to better tell the story of Snake from the third person with this new character as our narrator for the majority of the game." But Kojima is adamant that MGS2 is still a game about Snake. "Make no mistake about it," he states. "Solid Snake is still the main character in Metal Gear Solid 2 even though he is not the main narrator this time around."

Question

Why the hell are you posting a question about the PC version of Red Faction in a thread discussing Metal Gear Solid 2 on the PS2?

Talking hm

I had to beat it for my friend. I walked in on the fight with the Rex's and basiclly took over from there. He rented the game AND a PS2, so without a memory cartridge, we had to leave the game on all of the time.
i thought the final battle was waayy anticlimatic. But then again, theres not really a way to top what came just before it. There seemed to be a problem with creating climax in the amount of cut scene between the battles or, in fact, in the game in general. I also thought the game left far to large a hole to be filled in by a sequel. I guess it was Hideo's way of redirecting the focus back to Snake. And yeah, you missed something pretty big by not waiting til the end of the credits. Didnt the last game teach you anything about that? (you remember, Ocelot still being alive and the mention of Solidous?)

oh yeah. The arm thing with Ocelot was kind of wack.

I'm on my 6th time through. and I'm STILL happy with the game.

Although I think the game should be called "metal gear raiden", the experience is second to none due to the awesome gameplay.

I think Kojima should make a directors cut of MGS2 and make you play as snake the entire game. there are still parts in the add's where it shows someone playing as snake inside the plant.
