Is there any alternative to that *#@^&*###^@#^(^*(* 3D Studio Max? I also need something for terrain generation that works well with unrealed

There isnt one single app that can do everything 3DSMax can do but there are plenty of apps that combined will do everything you need. If Gmax ever gets a UT pluging then it will be able to do almost every thing 3DSMax can do as it is virtually the same program but until then its milkshape and terraedit mostly and maybe blender if you want to try to figure out the extremely stupid and overly complexe design.

Learning 3DSMax is usually not the hard part, its paying $3000 for a product, assuming you arent a thief, that you are only likely to use for a hobby.

It's a free 3DSMAX but it can only export to certain (game) formats. As long as there isn't an Unreal .t3d/mesh format exporter for it it's not usable for UT mapping/modelling.
