Patching and single player game

I have just started Playing unreal and when I first installed it I made sure that it had the latest patch, just like I do with every other game. I heard a rumor that the patches improve the multiplayer game but cause problems with single player. Something about some buttons not working? Anyway, I am now at the beginning of Terraniux Underground, and I assume that the button on the wall is supposed to bring the elevator down, but it doesn't. Is this due to the patch, or is there something I'm missing?

The patch only breaks SP on some computers.

If you are at Terraniux Underground then the button brings the lift down but you can't ride it up yet; there's a large door in the shadows near the button that takes you to a control room.
