I've made a level with a pool in the middle of the room. The room consists of a basic rectangle with a cylinder pit sunk into the floor. My question is: Why everytime I rebuild the level all my textures disappear. The rectangle goes entirely black and makes the map very hard to edit!

May sound obvious, but have you added a light yet? I believe that if you've applied txtures to all surfaces, but haven't added a light, you won't see anything after the first Rebuild, (happened to me, at least. Only found out by accident that you seem to need a light to see anything after rebuilding the first time).

Alternatively, if you are at the stage where you don't want to mess with lights yet then uncheck the 'Auto BSP' box at the bottom of the rebuild pop-up. There will be no lighting effects updates made whatsoever during the rebuild then.

You can also press the Mode menu item in the 3d view and select Textures. Might help, who knows?
