Coinciding with the announcement of PlayStation 4, a new Unreal Engine 4 tech demo video has been released. No talking, just lots of pretty things to soak in...

So what are they gonna use instead of PhysX now that the PS4 uses mostly off-the-shelf AMD parts?

Looks good, Elemental ++ as Mark Rein called it in an interview.

Here's a comparison of Elemental first, then Elemental++ (more like Elemental--). ![]() There are so many issues in the bottom image, both technical and in terms of the composition of the scene it's worrying. Why does the character not seem to have any normal maps? Where's the specular reflection on any of the wall surfaces and why does it look like almost everything in the foreground has flat, ambient lighting? Why are the wall textures blurry and are they using the entirely wrong mip-maps? Where's all the post processing gone and why has it been replaced with cheap nasty bloom/flares? The list of questions is endless, and ultimately the end result is just wrong and looks bad. It looks like they tried to hide it with the fast moving camera and the motion blur. |

Was that demo supposed to be rendered real time on a PS4, right?
Or on a PC with "similar specs". The texture on the archway is entirely missing. It seems like they used a beta version of that map. The meteors in the ice section of the video barely cast any kind of lighting.

Nah, it really looked great in the video.
It was about particles.

It looks to me with so many visual differences, that this is down to artistic styling, rather than looking more real.
It looks far less real, but the lack of depth of field is the one that stuns me most. Eh?

Those two images really put it into perspective. The top one is like next, next gen in comparison. "Elemental ++" ?
It's reported the PS4 was set to have 4GB DDR5 not the 8GB announced? Maybe that one below is a build based on 4GB? Last edited by Bgood; 22nd Feb 2013 at 02:05 PM. |

The majority of PhysX's feature set runs on the CPU anyway. I don't really get your point?

Without an nVidia card turning the PhysX setting to high in just about any game makes the framerate take a total nosedive when everything runs on the CPU, so why should it be different here?

...because it's a console game and they won't be using features the hardware doesn't support. The only thing that you'd want PhysX hardware for is certain types of particles.
FYI, some AMD hardware does support it. |
