Question What are these extra packages?

Posted Aug 22rd 2012
In regards to my question below, I just want to mention that I'm packaging my textures, meshes, materials in my own external file in this manner:

Package = The name of my package
Group = Textures, Materials, Meshes or what ever group the object I'm importing belongs
Name = The name of the file I'm importing.
By the way, I "am" saving the texture pack itself from time to time.

Question:
Whats happening is that when I go to bake my level, the editor says, You need to first save all packages, and it wants to save a package called Textures, and Meshes to the root of the game folder in Program Files folder. After I select yes, The files never are there though.
This doesn't make sense as I'm packaging all these things into their respective groups within my own custom package. And they actually are in the custom package because when I load it everything is there. So what are these extra packs the editor is trying to save in the root of the game folder?

Edit ...Update:
Posted Aug 23th 2012:

Ok, I just found this which might have solved my issue:
http://www.arch.ttu.edu/visualizatio...agecooking.htm

I've been saving my custom packages to the Cooked folder in MyDocuments as I didn't know where to save them because the editor didn't default to any specific location when I first saved my custom pack. So I've now moved the .upk to the Environments folder in the main program folder and the error seems to have gone away during baking. I also notice that all the default textures have prefixes before their names ..like LT_, HU_..ect. Do I need to add a prefix to my package? The pack seems to work without any prefix, but I'm not sure if it could cause issues down the road?

Thank you

...a gold mine!

I read this the other day, and oddly was just pointed it by Spooger.
Even though I can't much, other than to suggest asking at the Epic forum. I'd like to say thanks for opening a nice treasure chest of tutorials

Once I found a decent parent folder that kicked in with an index of sorts, I checked to see if it is in the Web Archive. Nope, well not yet.
http://www.arch.ttu.edu/visualizatio...rtual_Reality/
If you browse via the LiveWeb portal, it will save all these for posterity
ARCH 5344 - 001 Virtual Reality Software and Technology (3:2:2)
http://liveweb.archive.org/http://ww...rtual_Reality/
There is tons of useful links and even the tutorials link to more useful tutorials elsewhere!
Some of them are on now dead sites, but by the power of digital-necromancy, I bring them from beyond the grave! The Web Archive will fetch a copy close to the currently browsed date.

This makes a great portal for UEd users, and I have added it to my resource page.

Anyone useful with a site-ripper would do well to blag these (they'll turn into widows html help files nicely )

...errr.. Spooge is gonna laugh now...
I don't suppose you have his old gallery maps for UT99 ?

Hiya dr .flay
Funny you should say that. Spooger is a good friend of mine. We still talk by phone even after all the years gone by ..of the good old mapping days of UT. As far as his maps, I would have to look though my CDs. He's been very busy with things around the house, I wonder if he has backups of his own maps..haha. I'll have to look on my disks. I'll ask him where he keeps his gold. His levels are too priceless to not archive! And we can't forget the legendary Angel Heart among others out there.

Just wanted to add something in regards to the original topic. I've noticed that although I moved my custom .upk pack to Program Files\Unreal Tournament 3\UTGame\CookedPC\Environments
Another identical pack was created in MyDocuments directory by the engine. So now I'm wondering if I should be saving to the package in the new location or the location in the Program Files game directory path?

Sadly many of these tutorials I'm finding, are not covering all the details ..sort of leaving you hanging as to what the engine is really doing below the surface.
I have to update my Tutorial links, the BB Drac link was dead. I found his new site at the link below. His lessons were always great!

Yeah, he did mention you still chat.
He has occasional contact with William Sherriff, who I'm hoping will get back to me on this, as Spooger has had a few of the inevitable drive failures in the past.
I intend to turn the gallery map into a hoard-zombie type bloodbath

Thought the birrabrothers one looked familiar, that one is in my resources.
I haven't started editing in UT3 yet, but I am collecting any useful links for all versions.
http://my.opera.com/Unreal-Tournamen...ting-resources
Some of the sites I link to have excellent links lists of their own, so I avoid too much replication (and effort. hehe)
And I have a page for resurrecting dead sites that have been captured by the WebArchive, or have found a mirror or new home.

Again not much help, but it should find you more.
