I'm pretty much meh when it comes to tats, though, if I really had to choose one for myself, I'd prolly go for either a Yin Yang symbol or the Imperial Empire logo from SW at the top of my arm. The trouble with the latter is I think people would soon tire of having to play the Imperial March tune every time I entered a room.

Most stereotypes have at least some grain of truth. I think the truth here isn't so much the location or even the design but more the desire to simply have something placed there. However most tramp stamps are tribal art but that is probably because it is trendy and fascinates a simple mind for a short term (much like pop music).

Small byline: I saw a lady that had a ruler tattoo going up her back in that location. Not sure what that says about her but I can guess its purpose.

She has it just below her neck across her spine. It is, yes, a butterfly, but it was a custom Art Deco design that took her months to tailor to what she wanted. It was a design that meant something to her. I personally judge butterfly tattoos in the same way I do any tattoos; if it works well, and the designs great, then it's a good tattoo.

Butterflies per se aren't a bad idea as that that pic you posted proves. It's about how they're done and where. As pretty much everyone on here has said, get something that means something to you or you'll regret it.

The acid test is whether you're willing to wait months to find the perfect design for you. If the answer is yes, then great. If the answer is no, then you're probably going to rush into it and you'll regret it.

Tribal art is simple and functional. "Trendy" is a by-product, questionable and irrelevant imo.

It serves it's purpose. It is not always bad but it is often fairly simply to execute to a certain degree. It doesn't require a simple mind to like tribal art it merely takes a simple mind to think getting a tattoo in general is cool.

IMO a "fascinated simple mind" is an oxymoron.

Tribal art is trendy atm. Meaning it is a popular style to get. It appeals to simple minded people because of it's trendy status (herd mentality) and because the simplicity of it doesn't suggest allot of thought is required. I wasn't saying you had to be a simpleton yourself to enjoy it.

Usually the more simple the mind the easier to fascinate it is.
