It's basically the same thing, but with no multiplayer or trading.

Looks awesome, on the technical level, not gameplay of course, but yeah. Too bad it's probably gonna turn out to be vaporware.

You're probably right. Looks kinda neat, though. The thing I've hated about Freelancer and the likes is that they don't focus enough on any particular plot line. Does Freelancer get better with that later on in the game?
I'm really dying for a new space sim to play, but I might just go back through FS and FS2 on the FSOpen engine since I hardly remember them. I'm trying X3: Reunion right now, but haven't made much progress.

Nah, where Freelancer and others shine is open world and adventure, ect. Story was meh, but the story missions did have some coolish scripted events that you won't run into in the unmodded game. Modding the game plus multiplayer makes the open world and adventure aspects way better than the story events could ever hope to be though.
That's probably why I was never able to get into FS2 when I tried it. It was mission based and for a space sim all I want is open world.

It won't be vapourware any time soon. I've been following that project for a couple of years now - they've been making solid and steady progress.

So I played Aces of the Galaxy. That is pretty fun, but it's an arcade space combat shooter. Reminds me of Rebel Assault, kind of.

I wouldn't hold your breath for infinity to come out, i was playing the combat prototype more than two years ago, not only was it pretty damn crummy, there was absolutely no back and forth going on, testers would find problems, or suggest ideas, and the (one man?) dev team would just brick-wall everything and keep working on making better reflections on objects. On top of that the new features in the most recent videos are of features that were being worked on back then.
the idea of flying from space and landing on a planet is a video game wet dream though, i can only hope that the X series rip it off .

Alright, I called them up again yesterday. Said they got my email wrong so they weren't able to send it. Made sure they had it right this time. Said I would get a response within 24 hours. Guess what? It's past 24 hours and I still haven't gotten one stinking email from them. That's it. I'm callin' them up again and will keep calling till I get a darn response.

The one thing I thought Freelancer nailed perfectly was the feeling of it being a real-type space place, in which space people lived, and did SPACE STUFF. For example, you could sit around and do nothing and watch a fairly heavy amount of space traffic wandering past, doing seemingly realistic things and having sensible-sounding space chat on the space radio.
I didn't like the story though, I just wanted to make a trillion space dollars selling space goods. |
