Batman Dev Praises Unreal Engine

Now Gamer references a 360 magazine quote from Rocksteady, developer of the hit Batman Arkham Asylym, that sings the praises of Unreal Engine 3.

Quote:

"Unreal has supported many strong titles, so it provides benchmarks for us that are incredibly valuable at the start of a project. Seeing what is possible with the technology helps us make good decisions early on."

"No BioShock? No Mass effect? No Rainbow Six? No Batman?" added Walker. "Unreal has helped deliver some heavyweight titles so far for this generation."

Great engine, just wished Unreal Tournament 3 would have been a hit.

Well of course they're going to praise it. They've been working with Unreal exclusively from their very start xD

Surely their contract has some "funds for publicity" clause.

Unreal Engine is just like any other engine, as long as the studio knows how to use it then it's a great engine to work with.

That rules out Silicon Knights, then.

the tools are only as good as the craftsman, who is only as good as the tools,.. it kinda goes both ways.

awesome tools + awesome developers = awesome game.

Considering the quality of the games that have come out on UE3, I think we can safely assume that this all rests in the developer's hands.

I disagree.
The reason why Unreal tech is awesome is that you don't have to do a lot with it to make something either look good or actually work - everything works.
The original UT community proved this point by producing thousands of production quality levels that met and in many instances, surpassed the original production quality bar set down by Epic.
My point being the engine and tools provided are that good, you really can't go wrong.

How is that disagreeing with me? You basically just said the same thing I did.

UT had thousands of terrible maps. The fact that a few dozen of them were really good means nothing about how well the engine works.

Generally first maps or not maps made by people who where actually trying to make them good.

Brizz - you were intimating that only developers can make full use of the Unreal tech when in fact anyone after even a few months can cobble something together that looks good and includes a ton of scripted events and 'stuff' that impresses.
My apologies if I read your comments wrong.

I was implying that the only limitation on the quality of a UE3 game is the people developing the game, not the tools themselves. What you said makes a lot more sense now, though

The existence of that horrid Turning Point game and the oh-so-nearly-good Blacksite shows the engine doesn't magically make things awesome.
