Not sure, I have both set to True. I have (or at least had and soon to have back) 5.1 surround sound, but I have no idea if something that is actually true multichannel would play that way. All the outputs are coming out of the sound card and going into the receiver and then to the speakers. I guess I never really tested this. It runs in DVD mode (DVD All Channel Stereo mode on my receiver with DSP light lit). I can switch to MultiChannel mode (DVD Direct with MultiCH light and Direct light lit); there is also MultiChannel mode as DVD MultiCH with onlyMultiCH light lit. Not really sure what the difference was/is between these three, but the multich mode wasn't giving me sound in all speakers and subwoofer so I switched to DVD mode and it worked. I hope I haven't been doing it wrong all this time. I'll stop now, but a may post a thread soon in the Hardware... section to make sure I'm listening to all this stuff correctly, which I believe I was before but I could be wrong.

Is there any practical way to create a rip of these for playback with all four channels preserved?

The conventional way of making a rip is using XMPlayer and outputting to WAV, but that's 2-channel stereo only.

ModPlug Tracker (not ModPlug Player, the tracker!) can render music in quad channel 32bit, both for playback and for saving WAV files. Not sure what format exactly will be used for those WAVs, though.

I have to add that the Quad playback results on my SB X-Fi aren't convincing with 4 speakers, though. Stereo playback with CMSS stereo surround upmix mode sounds much better. Oh, and you can enable pro-logic surround in the ModPlug apps.

Ok, ready to try and save these to WAV with MPT. I asked around and WAV can support what we're doing here, but the real mystery is whether quadraphonic FLACs will work out. Supposedly, FLAC has multichannel support, so this'll be interesting. Once I make FLAC rips of the multichannel stuff (in addition to keeping the stereo mixes for compatibility reasons?) the new Unreal music collection is done.

Edit: Wow, playing around with MPT, this is amazing...I could potentially make my own little mix of Phanton with this! I knew these songs could be edited, but I didn't think it would be this hands-on.

Edit 2: Ok, multichannel FLACs are no problem. Foobar converts it fine, and even converts back to multichannel WAV by default.

Edit 3: Ok, success. Now begins the process of finding out which Unreal/UT songs have multichannel audio and making rips.

QUESTIONS:

1. Is there any easy way of looking at the song opened in MPT to see if it's just stereo or quadraphonic?

2. The original rips in the collection were ripped with XMPlay, 2 channels...but not downmixed, so the extra channels were just lost. Is there any value to keeping these? I can make XMPlay downmix the 2 extra channels into stereo, so I wonder which version (downmixed, or just completely lost) is best for the archive, and if there will be any difference.

Ok, I just decided to make two folders for downmixed / full quadraphonic.

I still have an issue. MPT's WAV output is so much quieter than XMPlay, which I used as the benchmark for all the rips. I could just export from XMPlay, but I can only select mono/stereo options for WAV output. If there's no way to export quadraphonic audio from XMPlay, I'll just have to deal with MPT and try to up the sample volume until it sounds close to what XMPlay delivers.

Made a thread here: http://www.un4seen.com/forum/?topic=10577.0

Edit: Ok, looks like OpenMPT may have a bug. Exporting quadraphonic WAVs doesn't retain any internal volume increases, but exporting other WAVs does (like 16-bit stereo). Asking if this is a bug at MOdPlug Central.

Massive necro to ask -- did the Dreamcast version of the game use downmixed quadraphonic files? See my comparison:

Thanks!

The plot thickens...went back to my old notes, loaded up Go Down in OpenMPT, and found the additional two tracks. But they're just basic backing tracks repeating some of the song we're already familiar with. I pretty much have no idea now why Go Down is so different on the Dreamcast version.

I reviewed other songs; Organic differs at 1:50 (kind of the beginning of the second part of the song, after the drum solo). Here it is. At this stage, someone probably just needs to ask Alexander Brandon about it.
