Games are Porn in Utah?

GameDailyBiz is reporting on a new law currently brewing in Utah that would label violent video games under the same category as pornography. There is similar legislation in Iowa but they've managed to not drag pornography into it, yet...

Hogue is certainly not the first politician to compare violent video games to pornography. CA Assemblyman Leland Yee and countless others have put playing violent games in the same category as porn or smoking cigarettes.

I don't think it's absurd. The pornography approach may not be the best way to go, but the violence issue is being taken entirely too lightly.

One could define porn as the unethical use of stimuli to evoke an emotional response, or the vulgerization of something so that it loses it's correct purpose. If that were the logic they are opperating under, then video game vioolence could be defined as such.

This is the technicality of it.

The fact is, though, this guy is a complete moron. His pointless ranting is no different than what has been done in other states, and his bill will never get passed because it's just like the ones in California and Illinois that were unconstitutional. Making a big issue out of this because it's in Utah is retarded, the state is less than 50% Mormon and out of those, I know tons that play violent video games.

Really, there is an issue here which every law maker seems to miss. Even the ESRB doesn't seem to be able to grasp what is going on entirely. There are loads of video games that are rated M that aren't even close to becoming nearly as bad as a PG-13 movie. As far as I'm concerned, the industry is trying to distance itself too far from movies, which is a mistake that has lead to the current outcry against video games. Interactivity nothing, you can't tell me that watching SAW or Hannibal is not worse than playing UT2004.

I just looked it up on two internet dictionaries and another Webster based dictionary we have around here, and it refers to porn specifically in a sexual nature.
Now, unless you are sexually aroused by violent video games, I don't see how this applies.

Like I said, this may only make sense in Utah.

Why is it so acrid that this happens in Utah? Most lawmakers essentially say the same things. I would think it would be obvious that, just as if this had happened in any other state, NO this does not make sense in Utah just as it would not make sense anywhere else in the civilized world.

edit: in fact, the news post even refers to other lawmakers that have made the exact same comparisons.

Sounds to me as though they are trying to label video games as "porn" because of the conotation that "porn" carries.
They want it in the same category (even though it really ins't by defenition) just for the shock value and so they can staple yet another thing you enjoy as "evil".

Seriously though, what puts video games in a world all their own so they can be trashed and hated and banned, but movies and music and even literature can be much much worse but also go unnoticed for the most part?

Its getting rediculous.
If I find myself unable to play video games one day because they are *insert latest adjective here* but in the same day I can go watch some R rated movie with nudity, swearing, violence, gore and stuff, I will be very upset and heads will role.

Am I the only one that wished the ESRB would've stuck with the rating system of the MPAA? Parents might not understand E, T and M but I'm sure they understand PG, PG-13, and R.

Maybe it would also help parents understand that, yes, indeed there are games, like movies, that are made explicitly for adults that SHOULDN'T be played by kids.

Now if you really want something to complain about in Utah politics look up stuff about Chris Buttars.
